Chapter 8

The break-in became worse once investigators followed the locksmith.
His name was Derek Hall.
He had been hired through a private request under a fake property management email.
The email carried my penthouse address, Harrison’s contact number, and an attached document claiming he had authority to enter.
The signature on that document was mine.
Except it was not.
Rebecca showed it to me in her office two days after the showroom.
The C was wrong.
Too round.
The line pressure uneven.
The kind of forgery done by someone who believed women’s signatures were decorative, not traceable.
I stared at it.
“Harrison signed my name?”
Rebecca nodded.
“Or someone did for him.”
“Patricia.”
“Possibly.”
There was a second document.
A trust information request addressed to the administrative office of Whitmore Holdings.
It asked for “updated beneficiary access instructions following marital dissolution.”
That phrase made my skin cold.
Harrison had not only tried to enter the penthouse.
He was looking for trust records.
Original amendments.
Internal passwords.
Old family documents.
Anything he could use to argue access through Lily, through marriage, through confusion.
Rebecca said, “He thought if he found the right paper, he could reopen what the divorce closed.”
“Could he?”
“No.”
“Then why risk it?”
Rebecca looked at me.
“Entitled people do not risk for what is legal.”
“They risk for leverage.”
I thought of Lily sleeping in her little bed.
The white shoes she wore in the showroom.
The way Patricia called her “our Voss girl” after the divorce, even though Lily carried my name too.
“They were going to use her.”
Rebecca did not soften it.
“Yes.”
That was the moment the last thread of guilt snapped.
Until then, part of me still wondered if public humiliation had been too much.
If letting Patricia’s card decline in a luxury showroom was cruel.
If Harrison being escorted out in front of strangers would someday hurt Lily.
Then I saw the forged signature.
The fake utility bill.
The trust request.
And I understood something freeing.
They had not been embarrassed because I was cruel.
They were embarrassed because I stopped making their theft private.
Harrison was released that evening pending charges.
He sent one message through his lawyer.
Claire is escalating unnecessarily.
Rebecca forwarded it to me with one note.
He is afraid.
I wrote back.
Good.
Then I took Lily to the park and watched her feed ducks like the world was still simple.

For her, I intended to make sure it stayed that way as long as possible.
