Chapter 11 - AUDREY LEAVES THE HOSPITAL FOR FOUR HOURS

Audrey’s doctors approved a short discharge window after her infection resolved enough for outpatient management.

Four hours.

Mask.

No crowded places.

Home.

She chose our city apartment.

Not the estate.

Nora waited by the elevator wearing the new shoes.

The doors opened.

Audrey stepped out with a cane? Cancer not necessarily cane. Better no cane. She used a lightweight transport chair? Let's keep realistic: weak, walked slowly holding my arm only if asked. She wore a mask, coat, and knit cap after hair loss.

Nora ran three steps.

Stopped.

“Can I hug?”

Audrey opened her arms.

“Yes.”

Nora hugged carefully.

Then immediately:

“Shoes.”

She lifted one foot.

Audrey laughed.

“Very nice.”

“They cost forty-five.”

I closed my eyes.

Audrey looked at me.

Apparently the number had become family mythology already.

Then Nora asked:

“You coming home?”

Audrey answered carefully.

“Not today.”

Nora’s face fell.

“I’m staying four hours.”

“Then?”

“Hospital apartment first, then maybe home more.”

No promises.

We had learned.

Then Nora:

“Aunt Theresa says girls need woman.”

Audrey looked at her.

“Girls need safe adults.”

“What if Mom sick?”

“Still your mom.”

“What if Daddy work?”

“Still your dad.”

“What about aunt?”

“Aunt is aunt.”

Perfect.

No complicated hierarchy.

Then Audrey looked at me.

“And no one becomes parent because they do paperwork.”

I deserved that.

We ate soup.

Nora showed Audrey drawings.

Nothing dramatic.

After three hours Audrey became visibly tired.

Nora noticed.

“Did I tire you?”

“No.”

That answer was too quick.

Audrey corrected.

“My body gets tired because I’m sick. Spending time with you is not the cause.”

Good.

Then Nora asked to sit beside her without talking.

They did.

I watched from the kitchen.

For weeks, Theresa had framed Audrey’s weakness as evidence that someone else should take over motherhood.

In that room, weakness looked like a mother lying under a blanket while her daughter colored beside her.

May you like

Still motherhood.

No title transferable.
