Chapter 19 - Diane’s apology fails
Diane’s first letter to Lily was screened by therapist.
It failed.
Grandma is sorry that Mommy and Grandma had a fight and everybody got scared.
No.
The slap disappeared.
The child became collateral to adult conflict.
Therapist rejected.
Mark told Diane why.
She became furious.
“I already pleaded guilty.”
“Then write what you pleaded guilty to.”
“I am not putting words in a letter that Emma can use against me.”
Mark:
“The case is over.”
There.
Diane’s instinct remained:
Manage record.
Then second draft.
Grandma hit you. Grandma was wrong. You did not deserve it.
Better.
Then:
I thought I was teaching you, but grown-ups are responsible for keeping their hands safe too.
Good.
Then no demand.
You don’t have to see me until you are ready and the grown-ups helping you say it is safe.
Therapist allowed Mark to read it to Lily during one of his visits because indirect contact was specifically approved for this purpose.
Lily listened.
Then said:
“Grandma mad?”
Mark:
“Grandma was mad. She shouldn’t have hit.”
Good.
“Grandma come?”
“Not today.”
Then Lily changed subject.
At two, letters do not produce cinematic forgiveness.
Then Diane’s supervised therapeutic visit eventually scheduled.
Fifteen minutes.
Mark not inside.
I not inside.
Child therapist.
Diane sat on floor.
Lily entered holding Teddy.
She stopped.
“No.”
Therapist did not push.
Visit ended after four minutes.
Diane cried outside.
Was that failure?
No.
Information.
Not ready.
Then Diane wanted another next week.
Therapist said:
Wait a month.
Diane protested.
Mark supported therapist.
Another separation from mother.
Then my own anger.
I wanted Diane to feel rejected.
That scared me.
I told my therapist.
“Does that make me awful?”
“It makes you angry.”
“Useful.”
“No.”
Then:
“Your job is not to make Lily reject Diane for you.”
I knew.
So I stopped asking how therapeutic contact went beyond what safety required.
No emotional scorekeeping.
Then final custody hearing date set.
Six weeks.
Main issue:
Joint legal custody.
Parenting schedule.
Conditions around Diane.
No more property.
No criminal case.
No financial audit.
