Chapter 16 - The ring valuation

Grandma’s ring became part of my own financial decision-making.
Insurance appraisal:
$103,000 replacement.
Market value:
Less.
I added scheduled coverage.
Premium annoying.
Victor asked:
“Why keep an asset you won’t wear?”
I said:
“Because Grandma wore it.”
“Good enough.”
Then I wore it once.
At home.
No occasion.
It felt too large.
I took it off.
Put it in a bank safe-deposit box.
Not rental.
Not Victor’s office.
Mine.
Then Celeste’s sentencing.
Before that, presentence report.
No prior financial convictions.
One recent battery conviction.
Business owner.
Restitution complete.
Accepted responsibility late.
No ongoing trust access.
No additional victims found.
Prosecutor requested:
Sixty days jail, mostly suspended.
Probation.
Financial ethics course/community service.
Defense requested:
Probation only.
Then victim statement from Silver Mesa, not me.
Trust described:
Administrative disruption.
Professional costs.
Loss of confidence.
No false claim of million-dollar loss.
Then I submitted:
My mother did not steal my entire inheritance. She used property that was not hers because she decided future entitlement made present permission unnecessary. That same belief is what she used on me when I was injured.
Then:
Please sentence what she did, not what people imagine six black SUVs meant.
I surprised myself.
Then judge:
Felony conviction.
Ninety days custody.
Eighty-five suspended.
Five days actual.
Two years probation.
Restitution/surcharge satisfied.
No fiduciary role involving third-party assets without disclosure and approval during probation.
Community service.
No contact with me except if I consent through counsel during existing order period.
No dramatic years.
Then Citrine House bank.
Felony financial conviction triggered review.
Did lender call line?
No.
It required:
Melissa sole bank-signing authority.
Quarterly CPA statements.
No Celeste access to client escrow/deposits without second signer.
Celeste retained ownership and design/client role.
Could she continue business?
Yes.
Under constraints.
That was proportional.
Then family advisory seat at Silver Mesa.
Independent review concluded Celeste should be suspended for three years or until probation ends, whichever longer, because role involved trust recommendations.
She objected.
Then withdrew.
Her seat became vacant.
I still refused it.
Silver Mesa appointed independent family liaison? The committee continued with other branches.
No Erin ascension.
Then my own back.
At five months:
Fracture healed radiographically.
No brace.
PT.
Occasional pain after long days.
Permanent restrictions?
None beyond sensible lifting progression.
No miraculous zero pain.
Then I returned full-time.
I stopped using “cripple” in my own head.
My mother’s word had lodged there.
Therapy helped.
Yes.
Therapy again.

Not a magical chapter mechanism.
Just work.
