Chapter 24 - Celeste asks for the photograph

The video from the rental still existed.
My phone had captured:
Part of her approach.
The kick.
My fall.
Her insult.
LOCK ALL.
SEND.
Not perfect angle.
Enough.
Criminal cases over.
Attorneys preserved copy.
Celeste asked whether I would delete my personal copy.
Why?
“I don’t want to know you can watch it forever.”
I almost said:
That’s your problem.
Then thought.
Was I watching it?
Sometimes.
Too often.
My therapist asked:
“What does it do for you?”
“Proves I’m not exaggerating.”
“Who are you proving it to?”
Silence.
Celeste had spent my childhood telling me:
Too sensitive.
Too dramatic.
You remember wrong.
Video became external memory.
But conviction existed.
Medical record.
Witness.
I did not need to keep replaying.
I told Celeste:
“I’m not deleting evidence retained by lawyers.”
“I know.”
“My personal copy is my decision.”
“I know.”
Then two weeks later, I removed it from favorites and archived it encrypted.
Not deleted.
Not because she asked.
Because I was tired of scrolling past my own fall.
Then she asked:
“Can I have a copy?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s not for your therapy.”
She nodded.
Good.
Then family meeting.
Victor was not there.
Just me, Celeste, and therapist.
She said:
“I keep wanting you to tell me what punishment is enough.”
“I don’t know.”
“If I sell the business, serve jail, lose the advisory seat—”
“You sold the business because you wanted to.”
“Yes.”
“Those are consequences, not payments to me.”
She cried.
Then:
“How do I make it right?”
“You can’t make the kick unhappen.”
“What can I do?”
“Stop making me responsible for deciding when you’re done being guilty.”
Silence.
That was the hardest boundary yet.
Then she said:
“Okay.”
Not:
But.
Okay.
Then her probation review.
Technical violation addressed.
Otherwise compliant.
No early termination.
She accepted.
Then cousin Dana’s wedding had passed.
I sent gift.
Celeste attended.
