Chapter 4 - The body-camera video

Detective Marlowe did not hand me his body-camera recording.
That is not how police evidence works.
But during the investigation, I learned what it showed.
Later, through discovery related to Lena’s criminal case and my own misdemeanor complaint, my attorney and I watched the relevant section.
It began outside.
Marlowe walking up my parents’ driveway.
His breathing.
Shoes against concrete.
Mrs. Keller speaking from somewhere behind him:
“That’s the house.”
Then voices through the open door.
Lena:
“You leave every time he whines.”
Me:
“He asked me to go home.”
Marlowe announces:
“Police department.”
Nobody responds.
He moves closer.
The camera catches the living room from the doorway.
Eli beside me.
Lena holding perfume.
Lena:
“You know what happens when you complain about everything?”
My:
“Enough.”
Then Eli:
“Stop.”
Lena raises the bottle.
Spray.
Eli screams.
My:
“What the hell are you doing?!”
I move.
Slap Lena.
Clear.
No ambiguity.
Then Lena:
“He kept whining.”
Diane, laughing:
“It’s fine; the kids are just playing around.”
Peter:
“He deserved it.”
Me:
“He’s only FIVE years old, you asshole!”
Then Marlowe.
“I don’t think so, based on what I just witnessed.”
The footage did not capture some hidden confession.
It captured enough.
Most importantly, it destroyed several stories before they could become established.
Lena later claimed she had sprayed:
“Into the air beside him.”
Video showed the nozzle directed at Eli’s face from several feet away.
Diane claimed she had not understood what happened.
Video showed her looking directly at Lena and Eli immediately after the spray.
Peter claimed he was saying Eli deserved:
“a scolding.”
The timing made that difficult.
No miracle forensics.
May you like
A camera standing in an ordinary doorway.
That was all.
