Mom’s conduct hurt differently.
Dad had always been willing to treat rules as flexible.
Mom had always presented herself as:
the careful one.
She signed a witness line without witnessing.
Why?
Because Dad said:
“It’s just confirming Laura’s signature.”
Mom asked:
“Did she sign?”
Dad said:
“Yes.”
Mom signed.
She did not call me.
Did not verify.
Did not think:
Why am I witnessing something I did not witness?
Because family roles overrode ordinary meaning.
Dad handled money.
Mom trusted Dad.
Laura helped Ashley.
Therefore paper followed reality.
Except reality had never included my consent.
Mom entered a civil resolution with the bank.
No criminal charge ultimately filed against her.
Her role was secondary.
She cooperated.
Provided emails.
Admitted she signed without witnessing.
That cooperation mattered.
Dad called it betrayal.
Mom called it:
“telling the truth.”
Their marriage became strained.
