Chapter 24 - Money gets boring
I rebuilt every family payment from zero.
Mom:
Her health premium became her responsibility after the transition period.
I helped her compare plans.
Did not pay.
Dad:
No club dues.
No property maintenance.
His retirement income could cover his choices.
Ashley:
No studio subsidy.
The separate personal loan resumed with a lower payment.
Documented.
Emma:
I still bought birthday and Christmas gifts.
Sometimes paid for a special dance camp as a gift directly to her.
Clear:
Gift.
Not obligation.
Summer vacation:
Each household paid its own share.
The first year, we did not travel together.
The second, rented three separate condos near the same beach.
I paid mine.
Mom and Dad paid theirs.
Ashley paid hers after saving all year.
Nobody died.
At dinner one night Ashley said:
“This is actually less stressful.”
“What?”
“Knowing exactly what I owe.”
Yes.
Ambiguity had felt generous.
Clarity felt safer.
I also stopped saying:
After everything I’ve paid for.

If I gave voluntarily, I could not later convert the gift into moral debt.
