Chapter 11 - Gloria’s counterattack
Gloria stopped denying the finances.
She changed the frame.
“We raised her.”
That became her sentence.
In deposition:
“We fed her.”
“We drove her.”
“We sat through nightmares.”
“We missed vacations.”
“We rearranged our lives.”
All true.
Then:
“We did not steal from Lizzy. We used money intended to support her household.”
Some true.
Then Claire asked:
“Was the handbag for Lizzy’s household?”
Gloria looked irritated.
“One mistaken transaction.”
“The resort?”
“We needed respite.”
“Approved?”
“No.”
“Jewelry repair?”
“Mistake.”
“Cash to your credit card?”
“Reimbursement.”
“Caregiver salary approved?”
“No.”
There.
Then the closet.
Gloria said:
“Time-out.”
Claire:
“Why a locked door?”
“She ran away from time-out.”
“She was six.”
“She was out of control.”
“Did you deny dinner?”
“She refused dinner.”
“Did you tell her she was expensive?”
Gloria hesitated.
“I may have said caring for a child costs money.”
“Did you make her apologize by saying, ‘I’m sorry I’m expensive’?”
“No.”
Lizzy said yes.
No audio.
Credibility issue.
Then Gloria attacked my sister Rachel.
That made me hate her in a new way.
She said Rachel had been “financially irresponsible.”
That the trust existed because Rachel knew Natalie “could not manage money.”
False.
Trust existed because Lizzy was a minor and settlement required protection.
Then:
“Rachel wanted me to raise Lizzy.”
Her will named parents first.
True.
But not because she expected to die.
Estate planning.
Then Gloria produced a birthday card from Rachel:
Mom, nobody makes a home like you do. Lizzy is lucky to have you.
Emotional.
Not guardianship instructions.
Then Patricia asked me:
“Would your sister want Lizzy removed from Gloria permanently?”
Objection.
Speculation.
Sustained.
Good.
Dead people should not be recruited into current litigation unless documents support.
Then Gloria’s strongest point.
Lizzy had attachment to her.
Despite fear.
In therapy, Lizzy said:
“I miss Grandma’s pancakes.”
She asked:
“Is Grandma sick?”
She worried Gloria would go to jail.
Children do not switch love off when adults fail.
That complicated contact decisions.
Then Walt.
He stopped supporting Gloria’s position fully.
His lawyer filed:
Walt does not seek appointment as guardian.
Walt agrees temporary placement with Natalie should continue.
Walt disputes intentional financial theft but accepts accounting should be corrected.
Gloria called him a coward.
He moved into a hotel for six days.
Then back home?
Not yet. He rented a small apartment temporarily.
Their marriage remained intact legally.
But their united front cracked.
Gloria blamed me.
Text through prohibited? She shouldn't contact me directly under temporary order. She sent via Patricia? Better a message to family group maybe not directly. Claire preserved one from cousin:
Natalie has turned Walt against me.
I stopped reading family messages after that.
Then family court ordered an independent guardianship evaluator.
Dr. Marissa Lane.
Not therapist.
Not investigator.
She would examine:
Natalie’s capacity.
Gloria’s capacity.
Walt’s role.
Lizzy’s needs.
Financial history.
