Chapter 4 - THE EVALUATOR’S VISITPatricia Voss arrived at the hospital before police could locate her.
She wore a gray suit and carried an official county identification card. A security guard allowed her onto the pediatric floor because the emergency custody petition listed her as Lily’s evaluator.
Claire found Patricia standing outside Lily’s room.
“You are not going near my daughter.”
Patricia held up both hands.
“I came to stop the petition.”
“You accepted my parents’ story before Lily was hurt.”
“I accepted the assignment to keep someone else from taking it.”
Officer Ortiz escorted Patricia into an interview room.
Patricia admitted she had been assigned to Ruby’s death investigation twelve years earlier. She saw inconsistencies immediately.
Ruby’s injuries did not match an ordinary fall. The basement railing had been wiped clean. The wooden chair from the living room had fresh damage.
Before Patricia could request an autopsy review, Harold visited her office.
He brought photographs of Patricia’s husband exchanging money with a contractor during a city project.
“He threatened your family?” Ortiz asked.
“He threatened to send my husband to prison.”
“Was your husband guilty?”
Patricia closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
She altered the report.
The official finding became accidental death.
Her husband avoided prosecution. Their marriage ended two years later, but Patricia continued protecting the original lie because exposing it would reveal her obstruction.
“Why send Vanessa the photograph now?”
“Harold contacted me about Lily.”
He wanted Patricia to support an emergency custody transfer. The case was nearly identical to Ruby’s.
This time, she decided to record everything and turn the evidence over to authorities.
“Instead, you scheduled the evaluation,” Claire said.
“To make them believe I was cooperating.”
“You allowed them to bring Lily into that house.”
“I didn’t know they would strike her.”
“You knew what happened to Ruby.”
Patricia did not defend herself.
“Yes.”
She handed Ortiz a storage drive containing emails from Harold.
One read:
The child must present fear of the mother and stepfather. Diane will create the necessary condition.
Another included instructions for photographing bruises after Claire and Ben returned.
The photographs were supposed to make it appear that Ben caused the injuries during an argument.
Patricia was to recommend immediate placement with the grandparents.
But a later message came from an anonymous address:
Do not let Harold control the child. Secure Lily until the trust transfer is complete.
Claire looked up.
“Someone else wanted custody?”
Patricia nodded.
“The petition was never only about your mother.”
The anonymous sender had access to Lily’s trust documents and knew the rental property would be sold the following month. More than two million dollars would enter the account.
The sender ordered Patricia to have Lily placed in temporary county care—not with Diane.
Once Claire and Ben were accused and the grandparents were under investigation, an independent guardian could seize control of the trust.
“Who would become guardian?” Ben asked.
Patricia opened a sealed recommendation she had been instructed to file after the incident.
The proposed guardian was Vanessa.
Vanessa stared at her name.
“I never agreed to this.”
The recommendation described her as a grieving aunt with a stable home and no surviving children.
Someone had built a plan that used Vanessa’s history to make her appear sympathetic.
The same person who sent Ruby’s photograph may have been steering Vanessa toward the living room recording.
Patricia’s phone vibrated.
A message appeared from the anonymous sender:
The chair was too much. Move to the second child before Claire understands.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“What second child?”
Patricia looked toward her.
“I thought you knew.”
She opened the sealed case attachment.
It contained a current photograph of a twelve-year-old boy living with a foster family outside Dayton.
His birth name had been changed.
