Chapter 6 - THE TAPES UNDER THE WORKBENCHThe metal box contained twenty-seven recordings.

Most were labeled by date.
Some carried children’s first names.
Ruby.
Matthew.
Lily.
The oldest tape was recorded in the Harper living room nearly thirty years earlier. Diane was young. Claire and Vanessa were children.
Harold stood beside the same wooden chair.
The recordings documented a system, not isolated cruelty.
Harold created “discipline sessions” whenever a child threatened the family’s reputation, property, or control. Diane enforced the punishments. Harold recorded the child’s reactions, then selected fragments that could be used against parents during custody disputes.
Families from their church and neighborhood had trusted the Harpers with children for short visits.
Some later lost custody.
Others disappeared from the family’s circle without explanation.
The oversized rag appeared in nearly every recording.
Children were forced to scrub the place where they had been punished. Harold called it “removing the evidence of disobedience.”
Ben walked away from the screen before anger overwhelmed him.
Claire kept watching.
On Ruby’s final recording, the girl sat beside the fallen chair. Diane struck her shoulder, then left the room.
Harold approached.
Ruby held a small key.
“Where did you get that?” he demanded.
“Grandma’s drawer.”
“What did you see?”
“Baby papers.”
Harold seized Ruby’s wrist.
She screamed.
The camera angle shifted when he knocked the device sideways.
For eleven seconds, only the ceiling was visible.
A crash came from the hallway.
Then Harold returned alone.
He cleaned the chair with the oversized rag.
Ruby had not accidentally fallen down the basement stairs.
Harold carried or forced her there after she discovered Matthew’s adoption papers.
Vanessa watched the footage without making a sound.
Claire sat beside her.
Neither sister tried to soften what they had seen.
Ortiz found another recording made after Ruby’s death.
Harold and Diane discussed Vanessa’s premature baby.
“He cannot remain here,” Harold said. “She’ll use him to keep asking questions.”
Diane answered, “Where will Patricia place him?”
“Somewhere the adoption cannot lead back to us.”
Patricia had not knowingly participated, but Harold used her compromised credentials.
The recording gave investigators enough to pursue charges far beyond Lily’s assault.
Then the tape labeled LILY began.
It was recorded two weeks before the family visit.
Lily had not been inside the Harper house that day.
Yet a woman stood on the living-room rug wearing a child-sized coat and holding the oversized rag.
The woman’s face remained outside the camera frame.
Harold directed her movements.
“When Claire enters, the chair must be here. The phone should be beside the couch. Lily must be crying before Ben sees the room.”
They had rehearsed the scene with an adult stand-in.
A female voice asked:
“What if Vanessa refuses to cooperate?”
Harold answered:
“She won’t. She wants her son.”
Vanessa looked stunned.
“I had never spoken to Dad about Matthew.”
Someone had contacted her anonymously, sent Ruby’s photograph, and promised information about her son. The messages directed her to place the phone beside the couch and remain in the hallway during the visit.
She believed she was recording her parents.
In reality, she was following part of their prepared scene.
“Who sent the messages?” Claire asked.
The account used Patricia’s name, but the technical trace led to a device inside Ben and Claire’s home.
Ben’s tablet.
He stared at Ortiz.
“I never contacted Vanessa.”
The device log showed the messages were sent while the tablet sat connected to their home network.
Someone had entered their house or accessed it remotely.
The final message was transmitted the morning of the family visit:
Leave Lily for one hour. The truth about Matthew will be waiting afterward.
Vanessa had encouraged Diane to request the private visit.
