Chapter 10 - THE OTHER CHILDPolice found Rebecca injured beside the disabled scanner.

Miles was no longer in the room.
A maintenance hatch opened into tunnels beneath the old hospital. Investigators followed fresh footprints until they divided at three separate exits.
Ryan was taken into custody after receiving medical treatment.
His cooperation did not erase fraud, identity theft, financial abuse, or the custody petition he had weaponized against Claire.
Claire did not visit him.
She provided one written statement:
Noah is safe. Do not contact us except through counsel.
The emergency court suspended Ryan’s custody request while investigators reviewed the evidence. The company remained frozen. Employee retirement funds had not yet been restored, but Jonah believed most of the transfers could be traced.
Nothing was resolved completely.
Not the marriage.
Not the company.
Not Claire’s own legal exposure.
But Ryan no longer controlled the story alone.
Claire returned to the protected apartment with Noah shortly before dawn.
Twenty-four hours had passed since Ryan entered the kitchen and said divorce.
The suitcase remained unpacked beside the wall.
Claire placed Noah inside the bassinet and sat beside him.
Evelyn opened the copied master ledger.
“The third custodian has no name.”
“What does it have?”
“A birth date.”
Claire read it.
The date matched her own.
Jonah joined by secure video.
“The profile was created at St. Matthew’s on the day you were born. Same maternity floor. Same attending physician.”
“Is it another false version of me?”
“We thought so.”
He displayed the original newborn registry.
Two female infants had been entered under Claire’s mother’s hospital account.
One was Claire Bennett.
The second entry contained no first name.
It had been marked transferred rather than deceased.
Claire called her mother again.
This time, she refused to accept silence.
“Did you give birth to two children?”
Her mother began sobbing.
“I was told the second baby couldn’t survive.”
“Did you see her body?”
“No.”
“Did Miles handle the paperwork?”
“Yes.”
Claire looked toward the nameless profile controlling the network.
The biometric pattern was not copied from her.
It belonged to a woman with nearly identical genetic markers.
A twin.
Miles had not chosen Rebecca merely because surgery and training could make her resemble Claire.
He had possessed someone born with Claire’s face.
Rebecca regained consciousness in the hospital.
She denied being Claire’s twin.
“My real family died when I was young.”
“Who told you that?” Jonah asked.
“Miles.”
He had built her entire childhood from documents.
No one knew whether Rebecca’s denial reflected truth or another manufactured history.
Claire opened the sealed birth-certificate envelope again.
The cardboard backing had already been cut apart, but one corner felt unusually thick.
She peeled away the paper.
A tiny photograph fell onto the table.
It showed two newborn girls lying beside each other beneath the same hospital blanket.
One wore a wristband labeled CLAIRE.
The other wore a blank band.
On the back, Claire’s father had written:
Miles says we can keep one.
Claire stopped breathing.
The apartment lights went out.
Evelyn reached for her phone.
No signal.
From the bedroom came the soft sound of the bassinet mobile beginning to turn, though no one had switched it on.
Claire ran toward Noah.
He remained asleep.
Beside him rested a small gift box she had never seen before.
Inside was a hospital bottle identical to the one that carried the tracker.
Her smartphone lit up by itself.
A live camera showed Miles standing in Claire’s abandoned kitchen.
Ryan’s loosened tie hung over one chair.
The simmering pot had been removed from the stove.
A woman stepped into view beside Miles.
Same age as Claire.
Same eyes.
Same face.
She held the missing silver account key.
Miles looked into the camera.
“Claire, you thought Ryan chose you because of your credentials.”
The woman smiled.
“He chose the wrong sister.”
A notification appeared on Claire’s screen:
CUSTODY PETITION FILED — CHILD: NOAH BENNETT
The petitioner’s name was Claire Bennett.
But Claire had filed nothing.

Heavy footsteps stopped outside the protected apartment.
Someone inserted a key into the lock.
