Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN IN THE MATERNITY GOWNPolice surrounded the abandoned hospital before Claire arrived.

She remained inside a command vehicle with Noah and Evelyn while tactical officers entered through the emergency wing.
The maternity floor had closed six years earlier, but electricity still powered several rooms.
One contained biometric scanners, hospital consent pads, newborn wristbands, and hundreds of copied birth-certificate envelopes.
In another room, officers found Ryan tied to a chair.
He was alive.
Miles was gone.
Ryan had a cut above his eyebrow and bruises around both wrists. Paramedics treated him while investigators searched the basement.
Claire spoke to him through a secure screen.
“Where is Miles?”
“He left with the woman.”
“The woman who impersonated me?”
Ryan nodded.
“Who is she?”
“I don’t know her real name.”
“You knew she existed.”
“I saw her once before our wedding.”
Claire felt cold spread through her.
Ryan explained that Miles introduced the woman as a document-security specialist. She wore Claire’s hairstyle, copied her mannerisms, and practiced her signature.
Ryan objected.
Miles reminded him that Whitmore Logistics would collapse if the custodial network stopped.
“What did you do?” Claire asked.
“I gave her videos of you.”
“Private videos?”
Ryan lowered his eyes.
“Everything Miles requested.”
Claire’s prenatal appointments.
Work presentations.
Voice messages.
Photographs.
Recordings of her sleeping.
Ryan had helped build a usable version of his wife.
“I told myself no one would be physically harmed,” he said.
“You married the woman whose identity you were helping steal.”
“I thought I could end it after the company recovered.”
“You said that every year.”
Ryan began crying.
“Yes.”
Police found the impersonator’s preparation room.
A maternity gown lay across the bed. Claire’s driver’s-license photograph covered one wall. Speakers played her recorded voice repeating bank-verification phrases.
Inside a refrigerator were biological samples labeled with Claire’s name.
Most came from objects Ryan provided.
Hairbrushes.
Drinking glasses.
Discarded dental floss.
The newest sample belonged to Noah.
A dried blood spot taken from his newborn heel screening.
The hospital bottle had carried the tracker only.
Miles already possessed Noah’s biology through the maternity ward.
Claire looked at the sleeping baby.
His first medical test had been stolen before she ever saw the result.
Jonah reported that the midnight transfer was ninety percent complete.
Stopping it required disabling the biometric server inside the building.
Officers reached the server room.
The door opened automatically.
Miles’s voice played through the speakers.
“Claire Bennett must enter alone.”
Police refused.
The transfer advanced to ninety-three percent.
A live camera showed a woman sitting before the scanner.
She wore Claire’s face.
Not a crude disguise.
The resemblance was precise enough that even Claire felt a moment of disorientation.
The woman looked toward the camera.
“Tell her I’m tired of living as a password.”
She removed a silicone layer from her jaw and forehead.
Her natural face appeared beneath it.
Claire recognized her.
Rebecca Sloan.
The birth-records coordinator had not merely opened the accounts.
She had been trained to become Claire.
The woman found at the airport motel was someone else using Rebecca’s identity.
Miles’s network contained replacements for the people who created replacements.
Rebecca placed her hand on the scanner.
“I completed the verification at Noah’s birth,” she said. “Ryan watched.”
Ryan covered his face.
The transfer reached ninety-five percent.
Claire activated the command-vehicle microphone.
“Rebecca, Miles will erase you when this finishes.”
“He already erased me. There are no records under my real name.”
“Then help us create them.”
Rebecca’s expression shifted.
“No bank, hospital, or court recognizes me without one of his identities.”
“We will.”
“You cannot promise that.”
“No. But I can promise Noah will not carry what was done to us.”
Rebecca looked toward someone outside the frame.
Fear entered her eyes.
Miles had not left.
He stood somewhere inside the server room with her.
The percentage reached ninety-eight.
Then Rebecca slammed both hands against the scanner and tore free a cable.
The transfer stopped.
The screen went black.
Gunshots echoed through the hospital.
Ryan tried to rise from his chair.
Claire clutched Noah as police radios erupted.
A final message appeared on Jonah’s computer:
PRIMARY CUSTODIAN TRANSFERRED.
Not to Noah.
Not to Claire.
