Chapter 10 - Claire’s second message
The first message from Claire arrived at 1:06 p.m.
Not by phone.
Through Sarah’s hospital email.
Scheduled delivery.
Subject:
IF LILY IS SAFE.
Sarah immediately called Detective Reed.
The email contained no location.
Only a video.
Claire appeared against a blank wall.
“If Sarah is watching this, Lily reached the hospital.”
Sarah leaned closer.
Claire smiled faintly.
“Thank you.”
Then she became serious.
“I know Eleanor will look like the villain.”
Eleanor stood silently near the back of the conference room.
Claire continued:
“She made choices that hurt us. Do not erase them because she later became afraid.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“But she is not the person who started this.”
Claire explained how Nathan Whitmore approached Eleanor after Claire discovered phantom-patient billing.
He offered Eleanor consulting money in exchange for information.
At first Eleanor believed she was helping resolve “family concerns.”
Then she understood the truth and did not stop.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“That was her choice.”
Eleanor whispered:
“I know.”
Then Claire addressed Jonathan.
“My uncle knows I have the register.”
Evelyn looked away at the word uncle.
The family relationship was now unbearably complicated.
Claire continued:
“He does not know what I did with it.”
Sarah looked toward Reed.
Claire smiled sadly.
“And I’m not telling you either.”
A smart precaution.
If police did not know the location, no coerced officer could reveal it.
Instead Claire provided a condition:
“Find Helen.”
Helen Morris remained missing.
“She knows how to verify the register without exposing the protected children.”
That was crucial.
Simply publishing old Mercy identities could harm innocent adults and families who had lived under changed identities for decades.
Claire wanted accountability without destroying victims.
Then:
“Do not trust anyone who asks you for the full list.”
Sarah felt cold.
Because one person had already asked.
Dr. Evelyn Shaw.
Earlier that morning, Evelyn privately asked Reed whether Claire’s files named every original Mercy child.
At the time it seemed like fear.
Now it looked different.
Sarah glanced at Evelyn.
She noticed.
“You think I want the list?”
Sarah did not answer.
Evelyn’s voice hardened.
“I want to know what my father did.”
Detective Reed said:
“Claire specifically warned against anyone requesting the full register.”
Evelyn looked wounded.
Then angry.
“I am her mother.”
“And that doesn’t put you above procedure.”
Lily watched from the doorway with Maya.
She looked toward Evelyn.
“Mommy said Grandma Evie lies when she’s scared.”
Evelyn froze.
“What did she mean?”
Lily shrugged.
“She still loves you.”
Evelyn sat down.
That seemed to hurt more.
Claire’s video ended with one final clue.
“If Helen disappears, look at the first Mercy child.”
Mercy One.
The files showed:
Female.
Born 1969.
Identity sealed.
The original case predated Claire’s birth.
Detective Reed obtained judicial authorization to reveal only what was necessary.
Mercy One’s birth name:
Helen Morris.
Everyone stared.
Helen had not merely helped Project Mercy.
She had been its first recorded child.
Sarah whispered:
“She grew up inside it.”
That explained why she spent decades quietly protecting other children.
Helen knew the system personally.
Her identity had been changed as a child.
She later returned to the hospital under another name.
Evelyn looked stunned.
“My father raised money claiming Mercy began in 1975.”
“It began earlier.”
And Helen knew who was there at the beginning.
Then Officer Miller received a call from dispatch.
Helen had used a credit card.
Gas station outside Monterey.
Police located security footage.
Helen.
Alive.
Driving.
But she was not alone.
A woman sat in the passenger seat.
Sarah leaned toward the screen.
Claire Parker.
The missing mother and the missing assistant were together.
They were not captives.
At least not in that footage.
They had chosen to disappear together.
Then the camera captured someone in the back seat.
A man.
Only part of his face visible.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
“Jonathan.”
Sarah stared.
