Chapter 11 - the car near Monterey

Highway cameras tracked the vehicle south.

Then lost it.

Detective Reed refused to assume Claire was cooperating voluntarily.

The footage showed no obvious restraint.

That proved nothing.

Sarah remained with Lily.

The child had slept only two hours.

When she woke, her first question was:

“Did you find Mommy?”

“Not yet.”

“Is she with the bad man?”

“We think she may be with Jonathan.”

Lily looked confused.

“Uncle Johnny?”

Sarah froze.

“You know him?”

“A little.”

“When did you meet him?”

“At Grandma Evie’s house.”

Evelyn had never mentioned that.

Detective Reed questioned her again.

Evelyn finally admitted Jonathan contacted her two years earlier.

“You said you didn’t know he was alive.”

“I said I didn’t know where he was.”

Sarah stared.

“That was deliberately misleading.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he threatened Claire.”

“What did he want?”

“To meet Lily.”

“Why would you allow that?”

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“He said he wanted family.”

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“And after everything you knew about him?”

“I didn’t know everything then.”

Another adult rationalizing danger because of blood.

Sarah was tired of it.

Lily said Jonathan brought her a music box once.

Claire became furious when she discovered it.

She threw it away.

Evelyn remembered.

“It had a tracking device.”

Detective Reed stared.

“Jonathan was monitoring Lily.”

“Yes.”

That explained how he later knew Eleanor’s movements.

The current car footage could now mean something else.

Jonathan may have forced Claire and Helen into cooperation by threatening Lily.

The hospital became the safest known location for the child.

Maya secured emergency placement under county protection.

Eleanor agreed not to challenge it.

Then Paul Grant brought Sarah another piece.

Old Project Mercy staffing records.

Helen Morris appeared as an employee beginning in 1988.

But another name appeared beside her repeatedly.

James Miller.

Officer Miller looked up.

“My father’s name was James.”

Silence.

Sarah turned.

“What did he do?”

“Hospital security.”

Miller looked stunned.

“My dad worked here before joining the police department.”

He died nine years earlier.

James Miller had never spoken about Project Mercy.

But archived logs showed he helped Helen transfer sealed pediatric records during the 1990s.

Miller sat down.

“Was he part of this?”

No one knew.

Then Sarah remembered Claire knew Brutus’s name.

Maybe through public events.

Or perhaps because Claire knew the Miller family history.

Detective Reed opened a sealed file with Miller’s consent.

James Miller had signed an affidavit twenty years earlier:

I assisted Helen Morris in moving three children because I believed their lives were at risk.

Not fraud.

Protection.

James had been one of the old second-Mercy helpers.

Officer Miller stared.

“My father never told me.”

The affidavit continued:

If Jonathan Shaw returns, notify my son only if a child is in immediate danger.

Miller looked toward Lily.

“That’s why Claire chose Brutus.”

Sarah understood.

Claire had studied the old network.

She knew James Miller’s son became a K9 officer.

She knew Daniel Miller worked hospital sweeps.

She used Brutus because she believed James’s son would protect the child before protecting the institution.

Lily’s bandage had been a message across generations.

Then the Monterey vehicle surfaced again.

Abandoned near an old coastal clinic.

Inside:

Helen’s phone.

Claire’s jacket.

Jonathan’s bloodstained handkerchief.

No people.

The clinic was closed.

But one room had recently been used.

On the wall was written:

MERCY ONE + MERCY SEVEN.

Helen and Lily.

First and latest.

Detective Reed photographed it.

Another line beneath:

CLOSE THE CIRCLE.

Sarah stared.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody knew.

Then Miller noticed a photograph taped to the wall.

Seven children.

Different decades.

Different families.

The Mercy cases.

The seventh space was not Lily.

It was blank.

Underneath:

MERCY SEVEN WAS NEVER LILY.

Everyone froze.

Claire’s folder had used Lily as the administrative link.

But perhaps the original Mercy Seven referred to someone else.

Someone whose identity had been erased before Lily was ever born.

👉 The coastal clinic revealed that Lily’s “Mercy Seven” label may have been a decoy, while the true seventh child remained hidden from every record police had recovered.
