Chapter 12 - the dispatcher who stayed on the line
Rachel Sloan moved into protective housing.
She continued working from a secure dispatch center because she refused to let Grant force her from the job.
Laura called her there one evening.
For the first few minutes, neither woman knew how to speak about the connection.
Their parents had raised the wrong children because a criminal clinic treated infants as merchandise.
Rachel finally said:
“I had good parents.”
“So did I.”
“That doesn’t make the switch acceptable.”
“No.”
“Do you want us to call each other sisters?”
Laura looked toward Grace sleeping in her bassinet.
“Not because a file tells us to.”
Rachel exhaled.
“Good.”
They agreed to begin as two women connected by evidence and choice.
No immediate family title.
No obligation.
It was the opposite of Judith’s belief that blood created ownership.
Rachel described the hidden call.
Laura had remained silent for the first forty seconds.
Dispatch heard breathing, wind, and men’s voices.
Rachel almost disconnected because accidental emergency calls were common.
Then she heard Judith say:
Maybe now she’ll learn obedience.
Rachel kept listening.
That decision gave deputies the beginning of the crime.
Grant later claimed the call captured only a family disagreement.
The complete audio made the hole impossible to rename.
Federal agents searched for Emily’s vehicle.
They found it outside a private genetics clinic near Council Bluffs.
The facility had received a package containing Grace’s stolen cord blood.
A technician admitted Emily paid for three comparisons.
Laura.
Rachel.
Emily.
No sample from the newborn was actually necessary, but Emily used it as a reference point.
The results confirmed:
Laura was Judith’s biological daughter.
Rachel was the Morgans’ biological daughter.
Emily was Evelyn Shaw’s biological child and Judith’s half sister.
Judith’s father had fathered a child with Evelyn, then concealed the pregnancy.
Emily was Laura’s aunt despite being only two years older.
The clinic fire destroyed evidence of both illegal infant placements and the founder’s abuse of Evelyn.
Emily’s rage had a factual foundation.
Her crimes did not become justified.
She had helped build false psychiatric records, steal biological samples, and prepare Laura’s confinement.
Police found a video Emily recorded inside the clinic.
“I wanted proof that no family could bury me again.”
She looked toward the stolen tube.
“But Grant wants the money. Judith wants the daughter. Kane wants the records gone. I am the only one who wants the truth.”
Then Grant entered the frame and struck the camera aside.
A struggle followed off-screen.
The final image showed the cooler falling.
Emily screamed.
Grant shouted:
“Tell me where Rachel is!”
The clinic’s rear camera showed Grant leaving alone.
Emily did not appear.
Blood inside the laboratory matched her.
No body was found.
Grant may have injured her and taken her elsewhere.
Or she may have escaped through another exit.
Judith offered to help locate him.
Prosecutors asked what she wanted in return.
Reduced charges.
Contact with Laura.
Potential visitation with Grace.
Laura rejected the final condition immediately.
Judith had no right to purchase access through cooperation.
The prosecutor accepted information without promising family contact.
Judith revealed Grant’s childhood hiding place: a storm shelter beneath Robert Bennett’s abandoned farmhouse near Pella.
Agents entered.
The shelter contained weapons, forged identity documents, infant supplies, and photographs of Laura’s home.
Grant was gone.
Emily lay unconscious beneath a blanket.
She had a head injury and one wrist secured to a pipe.
Agents rescued her.
At the hospital, Emily refused to speak to Laura.
She gave a statement through her attorney.
Grant planned to abduct Grace during the restitution hearing. He believed the baby’s trust could be controlled if both Laura and Rachel were publicly declared unstable.
He prepared evidence against both women.
For Laura: the pregnancy-psychosis file.
For Rachel: false dispatch recordings suggesting she misused emergency systems.
He also created a third narrative.
Emily as the obsessed nurse who designed everything.
Grant intended to become the innocent husband manipulated by three unstable women.
The evidence inside the shelter destroyed that plan.
His fingerprints covered the forged documents.
His voice appeared on recorded rehearsals.
Still, he remained free.
The criminal trial against Judith, Kane, Mara, and others began without him.
Laura testified.
Rachel testified about the emergency call.
Emily testified under a cooperation agreement, admitting her role.
She did not ask to be called victim instead of offender.
“I was harmed by the clinic,” she said. “Then I helped harm Laura.”
That sentence carried more credibility than any attempt at innocence.
Judith watched all three women speak.
Her daughter.
Her half sister.
The child she allowed another family to believe dead.
For once, she controlled none of their words.
Then the courthouse fire alarm sounded.
Security moved everyone toward protected exits.
Rachel remained at the dispatch evidence table.
Laura held Grace near the witness room.
The alarm announcement repeated twice.
Rachel’s face changed.
“That isn’t the courthouse system.”
The voice belonged to Grant.
