State and federal agents searched the maternity-clinic ruins.
The main building had burned and collapsed years earlier, but an underground records cellar survived beneath concrete debris.

Grant’s financial options narrowed.

Grant checked in under another name with an infant car seat but no baby.

Inside the room, they found maps of Laura’s home, Rachel’s dispatch center, Lydia’s office, and the prison where Judith was held.
Grant had not decided which woman to target.

The motel television had been paused on coverage of a public ceremony honoring Rachel for her role in the rescue.
The ceremony would take place at the county emergency-communications center the following week.
Laura urged Rachel to cancel.
Rachel refused the public event but agreed to a private recognition without announced timing.
Grant could not attack what he could not schedule.
Then Judith requested an emergency prison call.
She had received a letter from Grant.
It contained no threat against her.
Only a photograph of Robert Bennett’s old farmhouse and one sentence:
THE FIRST HOLE WASN’T FOR LAURA.
Judith began shaking.
The backyard hole had existed before the property-transfer argument.
Grant told everyone he dug it that week.
Judith now admitted she saw him preparing the ground months earlier.
“What was it for?” Laura asked through the supervised call.
Judith covered her face.
“Robert.”
Grant’s adoptive father disappeared five years ago.
Judith claimed he abandoned the family after discovering debts.

Grant told Mara that Robert moved to Florida.
The farmhouse photograph showed fresh soil near the barn.
Agents searched the property.
They found human remains beneath a collapsed shed.
DNA confirmed Robert Bennett.
A blunt-force injury fractured his skull.
Grant had killed—or helped conceal the death of—the father who raised him.
The backyard hole may have been a rehearsal based on an earlier burial.
Judith insisted she did not kill Robert.
She admitted helping move his body after Grant struck him during an argument about Bennett Family Holdings.
“Why help?” Laura asked.
“He was my son.”
“And Robert?”
Judith looked down.
The same loyalty that justified protecting Grant after murder later justified burying Laura.
Grant had learned that Judith would make every consequence disappear.
Until the hidden phone created a record she could not control.
Robert’s recovered watch contained one final audio file.
Grant shouted:
“You gave the company to Mom’s daughter!”
Robert answered:
“Laura is not Judith’s possession. Neither are you.”
A blow followed.
Then Judith’s voice:
“What have you done?”
The recording ended.
Grant knew Laura’s identity five years earlier, not last year as Mara claimed.
He may have planned the marriage long before approaching her.
The farmhouse search also found letters between Grant and Russell Kane discussing Laura’s trust before the couple met.
Laura’s entire relationship had been designed.
Lydia asked whether she wanted the marriage annulled in addition to divorce.
“Yes.”
Not because the years had no emotional reality.
Because Grant entered the marriage through fraud and intended financial control from the beginning.
The court granted emergency annulment proceedings while criminal charges expanded to include Robert’s murder.
Then Deputy Hart received a live license-plate alert.
Grant’s stolen vehicle had entered Laura’s neighborhood.
The deputy outside her house saw no car.
A second alert placed it near Rachel’s dispatch center.
A third placed it near Grace’s pediatric clinic.
Three cloned plates.

Grant had created simultaneous threats.
Laura looked toward Grace asleep in her arms.
The house alarm announced motion beneath the backyard.
Not near the door.
