Chapter 13 - MY MESSAGE TO GARYThree days after the incident, Gary texted me from a new number.

You ruined your mother’s life.
I should have blocked him.
Instead I answered.
Come near Ethan again and I’ll finish what I started.
Then:
I should’ve kicked you harder.
Brilliant.
His attorney used it.
Proof Brooke was violent.
Proof she wanted retaliation.
My lawyer—yes, at seventeen I somehow acquired a lawyer through Dad’s family-law attorney—asked:
“Do you actually intend to attack him?”
“No.”
“Then why write it?”
“Because I hate him.”
“Hatred is allowed. Threats complicate things.”
I gave police the full exchange.
No deleting.
No pretending.
My message did not make Gary’s conduct disappear.
But it weakened any fantasy in which I was the perfectly controlled teenage protector.
I was furious.
Scared.

And capable of saying stupid things.
Both could be true.
