PART 2

The ambulance sirens arrived before Patricia could speak again.

Ryan stayed on the floor with Emma, one arm behind her shoulders and the other hand pressed around hers.

He gave the dispatcher the address.

He counted Emma’s breaths.

He repeated everything the operator told him.

But his eyes never fully left Brianna and Patricia.

They stood near the kitchen island like two women trapped inside the house they thought they controlled.

Brianna had stopped crying now.

Her panic had hardened into calculation.

Patricia’s face remained pale, but her voice returned smoother than before.

“Ryan, listen to me.”

He did not answer.

Emma whimpered as another contraction hit.

Ryan leaned down.

“Breathe with me.”

She tried.

Her whole body shook.

He looked at the water on the floor and the papers on the counter.

Then at the bruise forming near Emma’s temple where her head had hit the cabinet.

He had seen combat wounds.

He had seen fear.

But nothing in war had prepared him for the sight of his wife begging for an ambulance in their own living room.

Patricia stepped closer.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Ryan looked up.

The words were so wrong that he almost laughed.

“A misunderstanding?”

His voice was quiet.

That made it worse.

“My wife is on the floor.”

“My sister had her by the hair.”

“You walked in and asked if everything was finished.”

Patricia opened her mouth.

No sound came out.

Brianna spoke first.

“She was hysterical.”

Ryan turned toward her.

“You were pulling her hair.”

“She grabbed me first.”

Emma whispered, “No.”

Ryan squeezed her hand.

“You don’t have to defend yourself right now.”

Brianna pointed at the papers.

“She wouldn’t sign documents Ryan told us to prepare.”

Ryan’s face darkened.

“I told you to prepare nothing.”

Patricia cut in.

“You were overseas.”

“You weren’t answering.”

“There were bills.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“I was in transit for forty-two hours because command sent me home early for the birth.”

“You knew I was coming.”

Patricia froze.

Brianna looked at her.

That small glance told Ryan another truth.

His mother had not told Brianna he was coming home today.

Or worse.

She had known and thought she had more time.

The paramedics burst through the front door with equipment bags.

Ryan immediately moved aside but kept hold of Emma’s hand.

“She’s eight months pregnant with twins.”

“Water broke.”

“Contractions.”

“She was assaulted.”

The word assaulted made Brianna gasp.

Patricia stiffened.

The lead paramedic looked at Emma’s face, then at the floor, then at Ryan.

“We need to move fast.”

Emma cried out as they lifted her onto the stretcher.

Ryan stood beside her.

“I’m riding with her.”

The paramedic nodded.

At the door, Ryan stopped and looked at Patricia and Brianna.

“Do not touch anything.”

Brianna scoffed weakly.

“You can’t just accuse us.”

Ryan pointed toward the pantry camera.

“I don’t need to accuse you.”

His voice went cold.

“I need to download the file.”

Then he followed Emma into the ambulance.

As the doors closed, Emma looked at him with terrified eyes.

“Ryan.”

“I’m here.”

“I didn’t sign.”

His face broke.

He kissed her forehead.

“I know.”

She clutched his sleeve.

“They said if I loved you, I’d protect the family.”

Ryan’s eyes filled with controlled fury.

“You and the babies are my family.”

The ambulance pulled away.

Inside the house, Patricia slowly turned toward the security camera.

The tiny red light still blinked above the pantry.

Continue to PART 3 to learn what was inside the papers, why Patricia believed the twins’ trust belonged to the Whitaker family, and what Brianna tried to hide before the police arrived.
