PART 8

Emma met the twins twenty-two hours after they were born.

A nurse wheeled her into the NICU because she was too weak to walk.

Ryan pushed the chair slowly.

He stopped before two incubators marked Baby Girl Whitaker and Baby Boy Whitaker.

Emma covered her mouth.

They were so small.

Too small.

Their hands looked like folded petals.

Their chests rose with fragile determination.

The nurse opened a side port and guided Emma’s finger gently toward their daughter’s hand.

The tiny fingers curled around her.

Emma broke.

Ryan bent beside her chair.

“She’s strong.”

Emma nodded through tears.

“Like me?”

Ryan looked at her.

“Because of you.”

Then they moved to their son.

He stretched one leg inside the incubator with surprising force.

Ryan smiled.

“That one is trouble.”

Emma laughed.

It hurt her stitches.

She laughed anyway.

For fifteen minutes, the world became only breath, glass, wires, and love.

Then Ryan’s phone buzzed.

Grant Ellison.

Patricia had been released pending charges.

Brianna too.

Both were ordered to stay away from Emma.

Ryan stepped into the hallway.

Patricia was waiting near the elevator with a lawyer.

She was not supposed to be on the NICU floor.

Hospital security had already been called.

Ryan walked toward her slowly.

His uniform was gone now.

He wore a black T-shirt and jeans.

Somehow that made him look more dangerous.

Patricia lifted her chin.

“I have a right to see my grandchildren.”

Ryan stopped several feet away.

“No.”

Her eyes flashed.

“I am their grandmother.”

“You are the woman who told their mother to sign papers before calling an ambulance.”

Patricia flinched.

Only slightly.

Then she recovered.

“I made a mistake.”

Ryan stared at her.

“A mistake is forgetting a birthday.”

“You heard my wife say her water broke.”

Patricia’s voice hardened.

“You are being manipulated by her.”

There it was.

The final proof that nothing had changed.

Ryan looked at the hospital security guards approaching from behind her.

“My wife nearly delivered on our kitchen floor because of you.”

Patricia’s mouth tightened.

“Emma has always been fragile.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“No.”

His voice was low.

“She was trapped.”

Security arrived.

Ryan continued.

“You are not allowed near Emma.”

“You are not allowed near my children.”

“You are not allowed in my house.”

Patricia’s face went white with rage.

“Your father would be ashamed.”

Ryan’s eyes hardened.

“My father created that trust to protect family.”

He leaned in slightly.

“Not to feed yours.”

The words landed.

Patricia slapped him.

The security guards moved immediately.

Ryan did not raise a hand.

He only turned his face back slowly.

There was a red mark on his cheek now too.

He looked at her with devastating calm.

“Thank you.”

Patricia froze.

“For what?”

“For showing them before court.”

Hospital security escorted her away as she shouted about betrayal and ungrateful sons.

Ryan stood in the hallway until she disappeared into the elevator.

Then he returned to Emma.

She saw his cheek instantly.

Her eyes filled.

“She hit you.”

He sat beside her.

“Yes.”

Emma reached for his hand.

“I’m sorry.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Now there’s no confusion left.”

Behind the glass, their daughter moved.

Their son stretched again.

Ryan looked at them.

The line was drawn.

May you like

And this time, he would guard it with everything he had.
