Chapter 5 - The Son Salvatore ChoseMatteo stood beside the bedroom closet wearing a hotel employee’s jacket over an expensive black suit.

He looked less like an intruder than a guest who had wandered into the wrong room.

That was the danger of men raised inside powerful families. They learned to make entitlement appear natural.

Adrian moved between Matteo and the child.

Federal Agent Dana Cole entered from the hallway with her hand near her holster.

“Keep your hands where I can see them.”

Matteo smiled.

“I am unarmed.”

Marco searched him.

No gun.

No knife.

Only a hotel access card, a burner phone, and Samuel Price’s missing flash drive.

Dana sealed the drive inside an evidence bag.

Matteo looked toward Elena.

“You caused a remarkable amount of trouble by surviving.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Speak to me.”

“I am speaking to the woman who disappeared with family property.”

Elena’s voice turned cold.

“My son is not property.”

“Under the trust—”

“The next word out of your mouth should be chosen carefully,” Dana interrupted.

Matteo’s smile weakened.

Leo watched from behind Elena’s coat. He did not understand inheritance law or criminal alliances, but he recognized hatred.

“Why doesn’t he like me?” he asked.

Elena knelt and turned him away from the room.

“This is not about you.”

Matteo laughed quietly.

“It is entirely about him.”

Adrian moved so quickly Marco had to block him.

Elena looked directly at Adrian.

“Your hands choose.”

The reminder stopped him.

His breathing remained heavy, but he stepped back.

Matteo noticed.

“Fatherhood has made you obedient.”

“No,” Adrian said. “It has given me something more important than proving I can hurt you.”

Dana ordered agents to remove Matteo.

He did not resist.

At the door, he turned toward Adrian.

“Ask Elena why your mother never returned to you.”

Elena felt Adrian’s attention shift.

“What does that mean?” he demanded.

Matteo said nothing more.

Carmen Reyes became the only person who might answer.

They left the hotel under federal escort before dawn.

The motorcade did not travel to a Romano safe house. Dana moved them to a protected government facility outside the city, where Elena and Leo received a private room with locked access under Elena’s control.

Adrian was placed separately.

Elena approved a supervised meeting only after Leo woke.

The boy sat at a small table drawing black SUVs with blue crayons. Adrian entered without guards and took the chair farthest from him.

Leo examined his face.

“Are you really my dad?”

“I believe so.”

“Mom says believing isn’t knowing.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“Your mother is very careful.”

“She says careful keeps us alive.”

The sentence wiped away the smile.

Dana arranged an expedited DNA test using cheek swabs. Adrian agreed immediately.

While the laboratory worked, Leo asked why Adrian did not have the family ring.

Adrian explained that he gave it to Elena before Leo’s birth.

“Why?”

“Because I wanted you to have something no one else could claim.”

Leo lifted his finger.

“It’s too big.”

“It was too big for me once.”

“Did men bow to you?”

“Yes.”

“Did you like it?”

Adrian looked toward Elena.

“When I was young.”

“Why not now?”

“Because people should not bow because they are afraid.”

Leo considered the answer and returned to drawing.

Elena watched Adrian carefully.

He knew how to speak to adults. He could control rooms, conceal motives, and turn silence into pressure.

With Leo, he looked unprepared.

That made the moments feel more genuine.

The DNA result arrived before noon.

Probability of paternity exceeded 99.99 percent.

Adrian read the page but did not move toward the child.

He handed it to Elena first.

She studied the numbers.

Four years of hiding did not disappear.

Neither did the night she fled the hospital believing Adrian had sentenced them to death.

But one uncertainty ended.

Leo Romano was Adrian’s son.

Elena sat beside the child.

“The test says Adrian is your biological father.”

Leo looked at him.

“Do I have to go with him?”

Adrian’s face broke.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“You stay with your mother. I will not take you anywhere.”

“Can you visit?”

“If she says yes.”

Leo turned toward Elena.

She felt every eye in the room waiting.

“Yes,” she said carefully. “He can visit while we learn the truth.”

Adrian lowered his head.

Not like the guards in the parking lot.

Not to an heir.

To the woman whose trust he had not yet earned.

Then Dana received confirmation from Baltimore.

Carmen Reyes was alive and willing to speak.

But she refused to speak by phone.

She claimed Salvatore had someone inside federal law enforcement.

👉 The nurse who saved Leo had survived four years in hiding, and she believed the Romano conspiracy extended into the agency protecting them.
