Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Carried the Baby OutDana changed the protection plan immediately.

Only three agents received the route to Baltimore. Elena and Leo traveled in an ordinary family minivan rather than a black convoy. Adrian rode separately because his presence increased visibility.
Carmen Reyes lived inside a Catholic residence attached to a small hospice.
She had changed her name, cut her hair, and spent four years avoiding cameras. Age and fear had transformed her, but Elena recognized the gentle voice before seeing her face.
Carmen cried when Leo entered.
“You became so big.”
Leo moved behind Elena.
Carmen stopped approaching.
“I’m sorry. You don’t know me.”
Adrian stood near the doorway.
“Tell me about my mother.”
Carmen looked at him for a long moment.
“Lucia knew Salvatore was planning something before Leo was born. She found trust documents transferring authority to Matteo if the child died.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“She tried.”
Carmen explained that Salvatore controlled Adrian’s chief security officer. Phone calls were monitored. Letters disappeared. Lucia no longer knew which guards remained loyal to her son.
The night Leo was born, Dr. Morris discovered an unauthorized sedative order placed under Elena’s name. The dosage could have stopped a newborn’s breathing.
He warned Lucia.
Lucia entered the hospital through the staff garage and confronted Salvatore. Carmen overheard part of the argument.
Salvatore said the child’s death would prevent a war inside the family.
Lucia called him a murderer.
Hours later, the hospital fire alarm activated.
During the confusion, Lucia placed Adrian’s childhood ring into Carmen’s hand and ordered her to remove Elena and Leo.
“She said the ring was the only proof Salvatore could not duplicate,” Carmen explained. “The engraving was made by Adrian’s grandfather and never entered into official records.”
Elena looked down at Leo’s hand.
The object she considered a safeguard was also Lucia’s final act of defiance.
“What happened after we escaped?” Elena asked.
“Lucia stayed behind to make Salvatore believe you were still in the hospital.”
Adrian’s voice became rough.
“And then?”
Carmen reached inside a cabinet and removed an envelope.
“Your mother recorded a statement.”
The video showed Lucia inside a parked car, her face illuminated by dashboard light.
She named Salvatore.
She described the trust transfer, the sedative order, and the plan to falsify deaths.
Then she looked directly into the camera.
Adrian, if you see this, Elena and your son were alive when they left me. Do not believe any body they show you. Do not trust the men who tell you grief requires revenge. Protect the child by ending what our family became.
The recording ended.
Adrian turned away.
His shoulders shook once.
Then again.
He covered his face with both hands.
Leo watched him.
“Is he crying?”
“Yes,” Elena whispered.
“Why?”
“Because his mom loved him.”
Leo climbed down from his chair.
Elena nearly stopped him, then waited.
The boy approached Adrian and touched two fingers to the sleeve of his coat.
“My mom cries when she misses people too.”
Adrian lowered his hands.
He did not pull Leo into an embrace.
He simply nodded.
“Thank you.”
Carmen continued after he regained control.
Lucia planned to meet federal investigators the next morning. She never arrived. Her vehicle was found at the bottom of a river two weeks later, but no body was recovered.
Carmen believed Lucia had been killed before reaching safety.
The envelope contained original hospital orders, photographs of Salvatore near the neonatal unit, and a handwritten list of guards who participated.
One name belonged to a senior member of the federal task force.
Deputy Director Paul Mercer.
Dana’s face hardened.
Mercer had approved the protective facility where Elena and Leo spent the previous night.
If Carmen was correct, Salvatore knew exactly where they had been.
Dana contacted only her most trusted supervisor and ordered Mercer’s access suspended discreetly.
Before they could move Carmen, a fire alarm began sounding inside the hospice.
The elderly residents were guided toward exits.
Smoke entered from the rear corridor.
Dana drew her weapon.
Adrian lifted Leo and followed Elena toward the front chapel.
Through the stained-glass window, Elena saw three black vehicles entering the courtyard.
Not Adrian’s.

Salvatore had found Carmen.
👉 Lucia’s final recording exposed the conspiracy, but Salvatore’s men had arrived before the evidence could leave the hospice.
