Chapter 4 - THE LIVE FEED

The live feed saved more than Olivia.
It saved the case.
Cassandra’s line about the twins was not enough on its own to prove a physical threat, but it was enough to establish intent, pressure, and state of mind.
Everything in this family is Bennett money.
They will be, if they’re born.
Those words changed how investigators viewed the accident.
Detective Reyes obtained emergency preservation orders for the construction site, Bennett Tower security footage, company servers, Cassandra’s event firm records, Mark’s vendor files, and Eleanor’s communications.
Grace filed a protective order preventing any attempt to access the twins’ custodial account.
She also filed notice with the hospital, bank, and trust administrator that Olivia alone held guardian authority.
Cassandra tried to recover quickly.
Her attorney claimed she meant “if they’re born” as a harmless reference to future inheritance.
Grace responded with the full video.
The tone.
The context.
The attempted transfer.
The glance at the camera.
The lie that it was off.
Context is merciless when recorded properly.
Priya Shah began tracing the money.
Within a week, she found $2.8 million routed through fake vendors.
$610,000 tied to Cassandra Bennett Events.
$940,000 linked to Mark’s shell suppliers.
$370,000 diverted from the St. Catherine’s neonatal wing pledge.
$180,000 in “emergency site safety consulting” paid the week before James fell.
That consulting vendor was owned by Derek Vale, the site foreman who had spoken with Mark beneath the scaffolding.
Detective Reyes found Derek three counties away trying to cash out his final payment.
He talked before his coffee cooled.
He admitted Mark ordered him to loosen one coupler and disable a secondary lock.
“Just enough to scare him,” Derek said. “Mark said James needed to stay out of the audit for a few weeks.”
Detective Reyes asked, “Did you understand someone could die?”
Derek began crying.
“Yes.”
Crying did not make him honest.
Evidence did.
His phone held messages.
Mark:
He’s going up Thursday. Make it look like poor maintenance.
Derek:
If he falls, this is on you.
Mark:
He won’t die. He’ll just stop digging.
Cassandra:
He doesn’t have to die. He just has to be unable to sign.
Eleanor:
No loose ends before surgery.
That last message was from James’s mother.
Four words.
No loose ends.
When Grace showed James the message, he did not speak for nearly a minute.
Olivia held his hand.
His fingers were cold.
Finally, he said, “She knew.”
Grace did not soften the truth.
“Yes.”
There are betrayals the body feels before the mind accepts them.
James had spent years surviving Eleanor’s control.
Her criticism.
Her coldness.
Her preference for Cassandra’s charm and Mark’s arrogance.
But part of him had still believed there was a line his mother would not cross.
The line had been imaginary.
Eleanor Bennett had not pushed him from the scaffolding with her own hands.

She had done something worse.
She had made the fall useful before it happened.
