Chapter 5 - SURGERY
James’s surgery was scheduled for the following Monday.
The family tried to stop Olivia from being present.
Eleanor filed an emergency motion claiming Olivia was emotionally unstable and under undue influence by Grace.
Cassandra submitted an affidavit saying Olivia had “become obsessed with paranoid financial theories.”
Mark claimed James was heavily medicated and being manipulated.
Grace responded with medical records, the live feed, the transfer documents, and James’s own recorded statement made before surgery.
In that statement, James looked directly into the camera from his hospital bed.
“My name is James Charles Bennett. I am alert, oriented, and understand the legal consequences of this statement. Olivia Bennett is my wife. She is my medical decision-maker, the guardian custodian of our twins’ protected account, and the only family member I trust to act in my children’s best interests. My mother Eleanor, sister Cassandra, and brother Mark are not to have access to my medical decisions, financial accounts, business records, trust documents, or my wife.”
He paused from pain.
Then continued.
“If I do not survive surgery, Grace Holloway is authorized to release all evidence in her possession to law enforcement, the Bennett Construction board, the trust administrator, and St. Catherine’s Hospital.”
Olivia cried when he recorded it.
James did not.
He had no tears left for people preparing to use them.
The judge denied Eleanor’s emergency motion in six minutes.
The court also issued a temporary no-contact order protecting Olivia.
Surgery lasted nine hours.
Olivia sat in the hospital waiting room with Marcus on one side and Grace on the other.
She did not pray in words.
Only breaths.

At 5:43 p.m., Dr. Hannah Price came out.
Her surgical cap was wrinkled.
Her face was tired.
“He made it.”
Olivia covered her mouth.
Marcus bowed his head.
Grace closed her eyes once.
Dr. Price continued, “Recovery will be difficult. But he survived.”
Olivia stood slowly, one hand on her belly.
The twins kicked.
Both of them.
For the first time that day, Olivia smiled.
Not because the danger was over.
Because James was still in the world.
The next morning, as James slept under medication and monitors, Detective Reyes arrested Mark Bennett.
Cassandra was taken into custody two hours later outside her event office.
Eleanor was not arrested that day.
She expected that to mean power remained.
It did not.
Grace and Priya took the evidence to the Bennett Construction board.
Samuel Price chaired the emergency session.
The directors watched the live feed.
Read the transfer documents.
Saw the vendor trail.
Viewed the scaffold report.
Then read Eleanor’s message.
No loose ends before surgery.
By unanimous vote, Eleanor was removed from all board influence pending investigation.
Cassandra’s foundation authority was revoked.
Mark’s vendor access was terminated.
The company accounts were frozen under independent oversight.
St. Catherine’s Hospital was notified that the neonatal wing pledge had been compromised by internal fraud.
The hospital did not issue a scandalous statement.
It issued a precise one.
Bennett Family Foundation funds designated for neonatal care are under forensic review. The hospital will cooperate fully with authorities to ensure all funds intended for patient care are recovered.
Patient care.
Not Bennett reputation.
That phrase mattered.
Eleanor called Grace that evening.
Grace answered on speaker with Olivia listening.
