PART 6

The word sold hit Diane harder than anything else.

Not because she loved the house more than Natalie.

Because the house was her costume.

The perfect Christmas room.

The respectable address.

The place where guests believed the Brooks family was warm, stable, and generous.

Without the house, Diane would have to explain too much.

She pointed at Lily.

“This is because of her.”

Natalie’s face went still.

Robert whispered, “Diane.”

But it was too late.

Jenny looked away.

For the first time, she seemed ashamed.

Natalie stepped closer to her mother.

Not aggressively.

Just enough that Diane had to see both her and the sleeping child.

“Do not blame my baby for your bills.”

Diane’s lips trembled.

“She changed everything.”

“No.”

“She revealed everything.”

Lily stirred and made a soft sound.

Natalie kissed the top of her head.

Then she reached into the green bag and pulled out a small wrapped gift.

Diane frowned.

“What is that?”

“A Christmas gift.”

“For who?”

Natalie looked at the tree.

“For Lily.”

She placed it gently under the branches.

Alone.

Tiny.

The only gift with her daughter’s name.

Jenny’s eyes followed it.

Something shifted in her face.

Maybe guilt.

Maybe recognition.

Natalie did not wait to find out.

Robert sat back down, defeated.

“How much time do we have?”

That question was the first honest thing he had said all night.

Natalie answered clearly.

“Thirty days to begin refinancing.”

“Ninety days before I force sale protection through the lender.”

Diane stared at her.

“You planned this.”

Natalie nodded.

“Yes.”

Robert looked wounded.

“You came here ready to destroy Christmas?”

Natalie lifted the folder.

“No.”

“I came here ready to stop letting Christmas destroy me.”

The room was silent.

The football game stayed muted.

Snow tapped softly against the windows.

Jenny finally spoke.

Her voice was smaller than before.

“Did you really cover the last two payments?”

Natalie looked at her.

“Yes.”

Jenny swallowed.

“Dad told me the business handled it.”

Natalie almost laughed.

“What business?”

Robert looked away.

Diane closed her eyes.

The answer was clear.

There was no business.

There was no plan.

There was only Natalie.
