PART 7
Jenny followed Natalie into the kitchen while the others stayed frozen in the living room.
Natalie was warming Lily’s bottle with one hand and holding the baby with the other.
Jenny stood near the sink, mimosa gone, confidence gone with it.
“I didn’t know.”
Natalie did not turn.
“You never asked.”
Jenny flinched.
“That’s fair.”
The microwave hummed.
For once, the sisters were alone without Diane translating everything into competition.
Jenny spoke quietly.
“Mom told me you wanted control.”
Natalie laughed softly.
“Control of what?”
“Late fees?”
Jenny looked down.
“She said you liked being needed.”
Natalie turned then.
Her eyes were tired.
“I liked believing I mattered.”
That landed.
Jenny’s face changed.
Natalie took the bottle and tested it on her wrist.
“When you needed help, they called it family.”
“When I needed help, they called it drama.”
Jenny swallowed.
“I was jealous of you.”
Natalie stared at her.
“You were jealous?”
Jenny nodded.
“They always said you were strong.”
“They said I was fragile.”
“That sounds like praise until you realize fragile means no one expects you to stand up.”
Natalie looked through the doorway at Diane and Robert.
For the first time, she saw the trap had shaped both daughters differently.
But differently did not mean equally.
Jenny had benefited.
Natalie had paid.
“I’m not paying anymore,” Natalie said.
Jenny nodded.
“I know.”
“Good.”
Lily opened her eyes and blinked at Jenny.
Jenny’s face softened.
“She’s beautiful.”
Natalie looked at her sister carefully.
“Do you mean that?”
“Yes.”
Jenny’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry I didn’t say it earlier.”
Natalie did not forgive her.
Not yet.
But she accepted the sentence.
Back in the living room, Diane’s voice rose.
“We will not be threatened in our own house.”
Natalie stepped back through the doorway.
Jenny followed.
Robert looked at Jenny like he expected support.
Jenny did not give it.
She looked at the mortgage statement.
Then at her parents.
“Is my name on any of this?”
Diane snapped, “Jenny, don’t start.”
Jenny’s voice shook.
“No.”
“I think Natalie started the truth.”
Robert stared at her.
