Chapter 10 - The House Robert BuiltClaire ordered the neighborhood evacuated.

Gas crews shut the main supply, but Robert’s private renovation plans showed a secondary propane tank beneath the old kitchen.

Vanessa could ignite it manually.

Daniel answered Claire’s call from inside the house.

His breathing was uneven.

“She wants the lunchbox.”

“Give it to her.”

“It contains every child.”

“No archive is worth dying for.”

“She’ll destroy it.”

“We have copies.”

“Not the signatures.”

Daniel still believed evidence justified risk.

Claire understood where he learned it.

“Daniel, put the lunchbox down and walk outside.”

Vanessa’s voice entered the line.

“He won’t.”

A gunshot sounded.

Claire closed her eyes.

“Daniel?”

“I’m alive.”

His voice came from farther away.

Vanessa had fired into the wall.

She demanded Miriam’s release in exchange for allowing Daniel to leave.

Miriam listened from federal custody.

“She does not want me released,” she said. “She wants transport access.”

Vanessa intended to attack the convoy and seize Miriam’s biometric keys to the wider network.

Again, the visible demand hid another objective.

Claire used the home’s old intercom system to speak through every room.

“Vanessa, the gas has been cut.”

Robert’s secret design files showed a mechanical ventilation shaft beneath the pantry.

A tactical team could enter there.

Vanessa knew the house too well.

She sealed the pantry.

Daniel moved upstairs carrying the lunchbox.

The same bathroom door remained cracked from his attack earlier.

He entered and locked it.

The irony was not lost on Claire.

Hours earlier, Eleanor and Claire had hidden from him there.

Now Daniel hid from Vanessa.

“You can’t brace the door,” Claire said through his phone.

“I know.”

“Open the window.”

“She has someone outside.”

Thermal cameras confirmed a second person on the porch roof.

Dr. Webb.

He had not been working only with Robert.

His alliances continued shifting.

Webb called Claire directly.

“Release Miriam and I remove Vanessa.”

“You drugged Eleanor.”

“Yes.”

“You participated in Robert’s staged death.”

“Yes.”

“You are not negotiating your way into heroism.”

Webb laughed sadly.

“No. I’m negotiating survival.”

He claimed Vanessa held records proving he fathered several children through the placement clinics, not only Claire.

Some samples were used without his knowledge.

Others with his cooperation.

He wanted the archive destroyed before more children discovered him.

Claire understood.

Webb was not trying to rescue Daniel.

He was trying to erase himself.

A tactical officer reached the attic through a neighboring roof.

The red lunchbox was no longer with Daniel.

He had dropped it through a laundry chute into the basement.

Vanessa followed.

Claire knew the chute opened near the propane tank.

The archive and ignition system were now together.

Daniel unlocked the bathroom and descended the stairs.

“Stay upstairs,” Claire ordered.

“I can stop her.”

“You already failed to stop her when Mom needed you.”

He went anyway.

The basement camera returned for three seconds.

Vanessa stood near the propane tank holding the lunchbox and a remote igniter.

Daniel approached with empty hands.

“I gave you everything,” he said.

“You gave me what Miriam allowed you to control.”

“I loved you.”

Vanessa smiled.

“You loved being told your weakness was sacrifice.”

She raised the gun.

Daniel lunged.

The feed shook.

Federal agents breached the basement.

The igniter fell.

A shot struck the propane line, but the gas crew had reduced the pressure enough to prevent immediate explosion.

Vanessa escaped through a storm tunnel carrying the lunchbox.

Daniel remained behind with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Dr. Webb vanished from the roof.

The house survived.

The original archive did not.

Then a small metal cartridge was found inside the laundry chute.

Daniel had removed the microfilm before dropping the lunchbox.

He gave it to Claire from the ambulance.

“I didn’t trust her.”

“You shouldn’t have trusted yourself either.”

He looked away.

The microfilm listed hundreds of placements and property seizures.

One current case appeared under Eleanor Bennett’s name.

The network had planned to declare her dead within two weeks and transfer the family home to a nonprofit foundation.

The foundation’s president was Judge Thomas Mercer.

Mercer stared at the record.

“I never created that foundation.”

His signature appeared throughout the filings.

Someone had cloned his identity.

Or he had signed more documents without reading.

The beneficiary listed beneath the foundation revealed the larger plan.

Upon Eleanor’s death, the house would transfer to Claire Bennett.

The network intended to make Claire appear responsible for her mother’s abuse and financial theft.

Every document Daniel forced Eleanor to sign was designed to point eventually toward Claire.

Vanessa had not merely wanted property.

She wanted to destroy the Assistant Attorney General who could expose the system.

👉 Daniel survived and preserved the archive, but the documents revealed the entire abuse scheme had been structured to frame Claire as the person who profited from her mother’s death.
