Claire recorded everything.
“Then who are you?”
“Miriam’s daughter.”
“Older or younger?”
“Younger by eleven months.”
The timeline appeared impossible.
Unless different pregnancies or falsified dates were involved.
Caroline claimed Miriam became pregnant again shortly after Claire’s birth while living inside the placement network. The father was not Dr. Webb.
It was Robert Bennett.
Claire stopped breathing.
“You’re saying my adoptive father had a child with my biological mother.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“After he helped her escape.”
Robert had told Eleanor Miriam disappeared.
According to Caroline, Robert found her months later and hid her in another Bennett property. Their relationship began during fear and secrecy.
Caroline was born the following year.

“No.”

Caroline claimed she wanted out.
“Why should I believe you?”

The refrigerator held medication designed to alter vocal tone.
A wall displayed photographs of Claire from childhood through adulthood.
Robert had supplied some.
Whether knowingly remained unclear.
Federal agents confronted him.
Robert admitted visiting Caroline but denied training her as a duplicate.
He believed Miriam was raising their daughter safely.
He sent photographs of Claire because Caroline asked about her sister.

Eleanor requested to speak with Robert.
The conversation occurred through glass.
“You loved her?”
Robert looked down.
“I thought I did.”
“While I raised Claire?”
“Yes.”
“Did you choose me because I could give her a home?”
“No.”
“Did you stay because you were afraid of losing the house you built around your secrets?”
Robert began crying.
Eleanor did not comfort him.
She removed her wedding ring.
“I don’t know what this marriage was.”
Robert answered, “Neither do I.”
No reconciliation followed.
Claire prepared for the ethics hearing with independent biometric protections. Caroline agreed to enter witness custody and testify against Miriam.
On the morning of transfer, the safe apartment was found empty.
No forced entry.

Claire felt horror.

Claire looked at Eleanor.
