part 5

PART 5
Back at the Mother’s Day table, all eyes were on Helen.
The second envelope sat beside her plate like a verdict.
Bianca’s hand still clutched the first envelope, though the check inside had already turned from prize to humiliation.
Lydia looked as though she wanted to disappear into her cream jacket.
George had stopped pretending to sip his wine.
Alexander sat rigid, his jaw tight, waiting for the truth he should have forced months earlier.
Helen opened the second envelope carefully.
No flourish.
No performance.
Inside were three documents.
She laid them one by one on the tablecloth.
First came the certified reimbursement check from the club’s accounting office, issued back to Helen for several charges reversed that morning.
Second came an itemized statement of guest charges, spa visits, private dining expenses, and travel deposits placed under her account by Bianca and, on two occasions, directly by Lydia.
Third came the club notice removing all proxy charging authority from anyone but Helen herself.
The manager stood beside her and said calmly, “As requested, Mrs. Morgan, all member account access has been restored exclusively to you.”
Bianca stared at the statement.
Her face went from pale to gray.
“What is this?”
Helen slid the folded bank receipt beside it.
“This,” she said, “is the confirmation that I closed the family expense account you’ve been borrowing against.”
George leaned forward.
“Borrowing?”
Lydia picked up the statement with shaking fingers.
There were dates.
Amounts.
Spa services.
Private lunch reservations.
Two wine orders.
A deposit request for the European river cruise package.
Her mouth opened.
Then closed.
Bianca reached for the paper.
Helen stopped her with one look.
“No.”
For the first time, Bianca obeyed.
The manager continued, still painfully polite.
“The charges were only released because the sponsoring member chose not to dispute them at the time.”
That line hurt Alexander too.
Because it translated cleanly.
Helen had seen some of it.
And she had covered it anyway rather than shame her son.
Bianca found her voice first.
“This is ridiculous.”
“You’re keeping score over lunches?”
Helen looked at her.
“No.”
“I’m documenting a pattern.”
Lydia turned to Bianca, panic replacing elegance.
“You told us Helen approved these.”
Bianca snapped, “She never objected.”
Helen answered before Lydia could.
“Silence is not permission.”
The room went very still.
A couple at the next table had clearly stopped pretending not to listen.
Somewhere behind them, a server placed dessert spoons too carefully onto a tray.
Alexander lifted the club statement and stared at the numbers.
“They charged the Palm Court brunch to Mom?”
He flipped to the next page.
“And the Lake Geneva spa weekend?”
Bianca turned toward him.
“I was going to explain.”
“When?”
His voice came out harder now.
“After the cruise?”
That landed.
George sat back as if someone had slapped him instead.
Lydia lowered her eyes.
May you like
And Helen, with all the calm of a woman who had waited long enough, folded her hands beside the documents and said, “I wanted one Mother’s Day where the gift reached the mother.”
Continue to PART 6 to see Alexander confront Bianca in front of everyone, Lydia realize how much her daughter lied, and the club manager reveal the charge that finally changes everything.
