PART 6

Alexander kept reading.

The longer he looked at the statement, the quieter he became.

Silence in a man like Alexander was dangerous.

Not because he was cruel.

Because people had learned his silence usually meant surrender.

This silence meant counting.

He read the dates again.

He read the amounts.

Then he looked up at Bianca with a face she had not seen in years.

“March ninth.”

Bianca’s fingers tightened around her napkin.

“What?”

“The Meadow Suite lunch.”

He tapped the page.

“You told me your parents paid for that.”

Bianca did not answer.

“April second.”

He turned another page.

“The club florist charge.”

He looked at the white roses in the centerpiece as if seeing them for the first time.

“You said you wanted to surprise my mother.”

Lydia stared at her daughter.

“We thought that was from you.”

Helen said nothing.

That was the cruel genius of truth.

Once it arrived, it did not need much help.

Alexander went on.

“The cruise deposit.”

He looked at the manager.

“What exactly was that?”

The manager cleared his throat.

“It was a preliminary reservation inquiry for four travelers under Mrs. Morgan’s sponsorship benefits.”

Alexander frowned.

“Four?”

The manager nodded.

“Mrs. Morgan was not listed among the travelers.”

The entire table froze.

Even George looked startled now.

Lydia turned sharply to Bianca.

“You said Helen didn’t like to travel.”

Bianca snapped, “She doesn’t.”

“That’s not the point.”

Lydia’s voice cracked.

“You put your mother-in-law’s account under our names?”

Bianca looked around the table like a woman searching for the old rhythm where irritation and charm could save her.

It was gone.

She tried Alexander.

“You know how she is.”

That was the wrong sentence.

Alexander looked at her as if he had finally understood the language she’d been speaking for years.

“No,” he said quietly.

“I think I’m just now learning.”

The manager, still standing nearby, added one final detail.

“There was also an attempted inquiry made this week regarding whether incoming family checks intended for Mrs. Morgan could be used to settle the cruise balance.”

George’s fork dropped onto his plate.

Lydia covered her mouth.

Bianca’s face emptied completely.

Alexander looked at her.

“You were waiting for my Mother’s Day gift to my mother… so you could use it for your parents’ trip?”

Bianca’s eyes flashed.

“She has enough.”

That sentence changed everything.

Not the greed.

Not the lies.

The entitlement beneath them.

Helen looked at Bianca for a long moment.

Then she opened her black handbag again and removed one more folded slip of paper.

It was smaller than the others.

Older.

Creased at the corners.

She placed it beside Alexander’s hand.

He stared down at it.

Then his face collapsed.

It was a copy of the wire confirmation from seven years earlier.

The down payment Helen had quietly transferred so Alexander and Bianca could buy their first house.

Bianca recognized it instantly.

Alexander’s voice shook.

“You kept this?”

Helen smiled sadly.

“I keep records when love has to survive people misnaming it.”

Bianca tried one last defense.

“We were family.”

Helen nodded.

“Yes.”

May you like

“And you treated that word like a withdrawal slip.”

Continue to PART 7 to discover the secret Helen never told Bianca about the house money, and why Lydia finally turns on her own daughter in front of the whole room.
