Chapter 2 - The warning in the car

Emily kept the phone facedown on her lap.

Claire slid into the driver’s seat and locked the doors. Outside, one officer guided Ryan back into the house while another spoke to Diane on the porch. Diane’s arms moved wildly as she argued, but the cold glass muted every word.

“Your friend Nora is waiting at St. Matthew’s Hospital,” Claire said. “You need to be examined tonight.”

“I don’t want a hospital.”

“You have a high fever, you were struck across the face, and you nearly collapsed before reaching the car.”

“I’ll recover.”

Claire looked at her through the rearview mirror.

“That is exactly the sentence people use when they’ve been trained to ignore their own suffering.”

Emily looked away.

The sedan pulled from the curb.

As the house disappeared behind them, Emily opened the photograph again. The man beside Ryan looked to be in his late fifties, with silver hair, a heavy overcoat, and a small scar above his left eyebrow. The picture had been taken from across the street, probably through a windshield.

The document between them was blurry, but her name was unmistakable.

Emily Carter Mercer.

Beneath it appeared the outline of a seal.

Not a divorce petition.

Something notarized.

“Claire,” Emily said, “did Ryan receive copies of the divorce papers before tonight?”

“No. They were filed under temporary seal this afternoon.”

“Could he have learned about them?”

“Only if someone at the courthouse violated procedure.”

Emily studied Claire’s profile.

“Who knew I was filing?”

“You, me, my paralegal, and the clerk assigned to the petition.”

“Anyone else?”

“Nora knew you were considering it.”

“I didn’t tell Nora I signed.”

Claire’s hands tightened slightly on the wheel.

“Why are you asking?”

Emily considered showing her the photograph.

The warning echoed in her mind.

DO NOT GO TO CLAIRE’S OFFICE.

Maybe it was meant to isolate her. Maybe Ryan had sent it himself. Maybe the sender wanted her to distrust the only person positioned to protect her.

Or perhaps the warning was genuine.

“Because Ryan didn’t look surprised that I had papers,” Emily said. “He looked surprised that I was leaving.”

Claire was silent for several seconds.

“That distinction matters.”

They reached the hospital twelve minutes later.

Nora Bell met them near the emergency entrance. She was still wearing navy medical scrubs beneath a long coat, her dark hair pulled into a loose knot. The moment she saw Emily’s face, her expression hardened.

“I’m going to kill him.”

“Get in line,” Claire said.

Emily tried to smile, but dizziness swept through her. The pavement shifted beneath her feet.

Nora caught her before she fell.

Inside, the emergency department smelled of disinfectant and overheated air. Nurses moved Emily into a private examination room while Claire completed paperwork. Nora remained beside the bed as a physician checked Emily’s temperature.

“Forty point one Celsius,” the doctor said. “That’s dangerously high.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“I thought it was the flu.”

“Maybe. We’re running blood work.”

Nora placed a cool cloth against her forehead.

“You should have called me yesterday.”

“Ryan said I was being dramatic.”

Nora’s face tightened.

“He also said you were clumsy when you broke your wrist.”

Emily opened her eyes.

“That was an accident.”

“Was it?”

The question remained between them.

Emily remembered the argument at the top of the basement stairs. Ryan had blocked the doorway. She had tried to move past him. His shoulder had struck hers—or perhaps his hand had. She had fallen three steps and landed badly.

He had driven her to urgent care.

He had cried in the parking lot.

Later, he told everyone she slipped.

A nurse entered and drew several vials of blood. Emily barely felt the needle.

Her phone vibrated again.

Another message from the unknown number.

THE MAN WITH RYAN IS HAROLD VOSS. ASK CLAIRE WHY SHE MET HIM LAST MONTH.

Emily’s pulse quickened.

Claire returned carrying a paper cup of water.

“Your protective-order hearing is tomorrow morning,” she said. “The police recording should be enough to keep Ryan away from you temporarily. After that, we move quickly on the house, finances, and business interests.”

Emily studied her face.

“Do you know someone named Harold Voss?”

Claire stopped.

It lasted less than a second, but Emily saw it.

Recognition.

“Where did you hear that name?”

“Who is he?”

Claire shut the examination-room door.

“He is a private financial broker. He specializes in distressed assets, hidden ownership structures, and corporate takeovers.”

“Have you met him?”

Claire did not answer immediately.

Nora looked between them.

“Claire?”

“Yes,” Claire said at last. “I met him once.”

“When?”

“Five weeks ago.”

The message had said last month.

Emily’s throat tightened.

“Why?”

“He contacted me regarding Ryan.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I couldn’t verify his information, and you were not ready to leave.”

“What information?”

Claire set the water down.

“He claimed Ryan had borrowed money against property that did not legally belong to him.”

“The house?”

“Not only the house.”

Emily pushed herself upright despite the pounding in her head.

“What else?”

“Your grandmother’s trust.”

“That’s impossible. Ryan has no authority over it.”

“He may have obtained authority another way.”

The doctor returned before Emily could respond. His expression had changed.

He held a tablet containing her preliminary test results.

“Mrs. Mercer, your fever may not be viral.”

Nora stood.

“What did you find?”

“An unusual concentration of a prescription stimulant combined with a sedative metabolite. Have you taken anything other than the fever medicine you brought in?”

“No.”

“Is it possible someone gave you another medication?”

Emily thought of the bottle on the dining-room table.

Diane had poured the final dose into a spoon.

Ryan had watched her swallow it.

The doctor continued speaking, but Emily barely heard him.

Her phone vibrated a third time.

This message contained no photograph.

Only six words.
