Chapter 4 - The accountant who disappeared

Detective Hale called Melissa back three times.

No answer.

Within minutes, patrol officers were sent to her apartment. Claire contacted a financial investigator she trusted, while Nora remained beside Emily, watching the hospital monitor as though sheer attention could keep her safe.

At 1:17 a.m., Hale received an update.

Melissa’s apartment door had been left open.

Her purse, coat, and phone charger were still inside.

Melissa was gone.

Emily listened as Hale spoke quietly with another officer in the hall. When he returned, his expression revealed nothing, but his silence did.

“You think Ryan took her,” Emily said.

“I don’t know.”

“Do you think she ran?”

“I don’t know that either.”

“Then what do you know?”

Hale pulled the chair closer.

“I know she called you minutes after we collected the medicine bottle. That may mean she learned we found it, or someone told her.”

“Ryan?”

“Possibly.”

Claire stood near the foot of the bed.

“We need an emergency freeze on every asset Ryan could access.”

“I can prepare the filing now,” she said. “But the court will ask for evidence beyond suspicion.”

“The recording, the medication, and the photograph are evidence.”

“They are pieces,” Claire replied. “We still need to connect them.”

Emily hated the legal calm in her voice.

“While you connect them, Ryan could empty everything.”

Claire met her gaze.

“Yes.”

It was the first completely honest answer anyone had given her.

Emily asked Nora to retrieve her laptop from the bag she had packed earlier that afternoon. Ryan had believed it contained clothes and medication. In reality, Emily had hidden financial records inside a false compartment stitched into the lining.

She opened the computer and entered three passwords.

A secure folder appeared.

Claire leaned closer.

“What is that?”

“Copies of every trust report I’ve received since my grandmother died.”

“You told me you hadn’t reviewed the assets.”

“I said I didn’t manage them. I never said I ignored them.”

Emily opened the most recent report.

The Hartwell trust held controlling interests in three apartment complexes, a medical-research campus, and a private lending company called Northstar Capital.

Ryan had no formal position in any of them.

Yet six months earlier, Northstar had issued a loan of four million dollars to an entity called Blackridge Holdings.

Emily searched the corporate registry.

Blackridge had been created eleven days before the loan.

Its registered agent was Melissa Grant.

Claire’s face became still.

“There’s the connection.”

“Not enough,” Hale said. “An accountant can serve as registered agent without controlling the company.”

Emily clicked through the filing history.

Blackridge’s mailing address matched a postal box rented under Diane Mercer’s name.

Nora stared at the screen.

“His mother?”

Emily continued searching.

The loan was secured by a personal guarantee supposedly signed by Emily.

She enlarged the signature.

It looked perfect.

Too perfect.

Emily had changed the way she wrote the letter E after college, adding a small downward stroke. The signature on the guarantee used the older form.

Ryan had copied it from documents signed before their marriage.

Claire noticed the difference when Emily pointed it out.

“That helps.”

“It proves forgery.”

“It suggests forgery. A handwriting expert will need to confirm it.”

Emily scrolled to the loan’s current status.

Past due.

Northstar had issued a default notice three weeks earlier.

The outstanding balance, including penalties, exceeded five million dollars.

“What happened to the money?” Hale asked.

Emily opened the transaction schedule.

Blackridge had transferred nearly all of it within forty-eight hours.

Some payments went to shell companies.

One payment, for eight hundred thousand dollars, went to a private rehabilitation clinic in Arizona.

Another, for one point two million, went to Harold Voss.

The largest transfer—two million dollars—was sent to an account identified only by a string of numbers and the initials E.C.M.

Emily’s initials.

Ryan was not merely stealing from her trust.

He was constructing a trail that made it look as though she had stolen from herself.

Claire understood immediately.

“If Blackridge collapses, Northstar pursues the guarantor.”

“Me,” Emily said.

“And the trust’s other beneficiaries could accuse you of self-dealing. Ryan would argue that your illness and instability made you reckless.”

Nora’s voice lowered.

“He was poisoning her to support the story.”

A chill moved through the room.

Emily searched her emails for references to Blackridge.

Nothing.

Then she searched deleted mail.

A series of messages appeared, all sent from her account to Melissa Grant.

The messages authorized the loan.

Approved the transfers.

Demanded secrecy.

Emily had never written them.

Hale photographed the screen.

“Can Ryan access your email?”

“He knew an old password. I changed it last year.”

“Did you use the same password anywhere else?”

Emily thought of the tablet in the kitchen. Ryan often borrowed it to stream movies.

Her email may still have been connected.

Claire closed the laptop halfway.

“We have enough for an emergency filing.”

Emily stopped her.

“Wait.”

One deleted message contained an attachment titled Contingency Schedule.

She opened it.

The document listed dates.

The first corresponded to her broken wrist.

The second to the day she became confused during the presentation.

The third to tonight.

Beside each date was a code.

W1. C2. E3.

At the bottom of the schedule was one final entry dated forty-eight hours from now.

It read:

M4 — PERMANENT TRANSFER UPON CONFIRMED INCAPACITY.

Emily felt her heartbeat accelerate.

“What does M4 mean?” Nora whispered.

Claire’s eyes moved toward the hospital door.

“It means whatever they planned isn’t over.”

At that moment, an orderly entered pushing a medication cart.

He wore hospital scrubs and a surgical mask.

“Evening dose for Mrs. Mercer,” he said.

Nora looked at the cart.

“She isn’t scheduled for another dose.”

The orderly stopped.

Hale stood.

“Remove your mask.”

The man abandoned the cart and ran.

Hale chased him into the corridor.

Nora slammed the door and locked it.

Claire pulled back the sheet covering the medication tray.

A syringe rested beside an unlabeled vial.

Emily stared at the clear liquid.

Across the hospital corridor, an alarm began to sound.

Then the lights went out.

👉 Emily discovered a plan to declare her permanently incapacitated, and someone had already entered the hospital to finish what Ryan began.
