Chapter 13 - the room beneath Saint Mercy

The entrance to the original identity lab was hidden inside an unused maternity ward.
Mary entered with Ben, Roger, M-7, M-12, Warren, and a federal tactical team. Dr. Voss remained in custody but guided them through the security system.
Henry was kept away from the operation.
Roger hated leaving him again.
This time Henry had made him promise to return before breakfast.
The elevator descended beneath Saint Mercy.
At the bottom, the doors opened onto a circular chamber.
Twelve medical chairs surrounded a central platform.
Each chair carried a designation from M-1 to M-12.
Lydia lay unconscious on the platform.
Olivia stood beside her holding the glass patient ledger.
She wore no blue coat now.
Her hospital gown revealed scars covering her arms and neck.
Captain Warren stepped forward.
“Olivia.”
She looked at him.
“You should not have come.”
“You are my daughter.”
“You remembered that only when I stood in front of you.”
“I searched for you.”
“You obeyed them.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
Mary aimed her weapon.
“Step away from Lydia.”
Olivia placed the red toy wheel into the central console.
The chamber activated.
M-7 and M-12 gasped.
Lights beneath their feet turned blue.
“Both women are connected to the system,” Olivia said. “The wheel contains Melissa’s original biometric key.”
“Then identify her without killing anyone,” Mary replied.
“The system cannot preserve conflicting identities.”
“Bellweather created that rule.”
“My mother created it.”
Voss’s voice came through Mary’s radio.
“I can override the termination command.”
Olivia laughed.
“You always say you can save people after building the thing that kills them.”
Warren approached slowly.
“What happens after you identify Melissa?”
“I find Lydia’s birth record.”
“And then?”
“I take my daughter away.”
“She may not remember you.”
“I remember her.”
“That is not the same.”
Olivia’s face tightened.
“You lost the right to lecture me about parenthood.”
Warren stopped.
“You’re right.”
The answer surprised her.
He removed his weapon and placed it on the floor.
“I chose my career when I should have chosen you. I believed lies because they were easier than searching. I helped Bellweather hurt Roger, Henry, and Melissa because I was afraid of losing you again.”
Olivia’s eyes filled.
“I already lost you.”
“Then don’t lose your daughter the same way.”
She looked at Lydia.
For a moment, Mary thought she would surrender.
Then the system spoke.
BIOMETRIC KEY ACCEPTED.
IDENTITY COMPARISON BEGINNING.
M-7 and M-12 were pulled toward separate chairs by magnetic restraints.
Roger ran toward M-7.
A barrier rose.
“No!”
The chamber scanned both women.
Images appeared overhead.
Memories.
Melissa holding Henry.
Clara Dean swimming in a lake.
M-12 in a white room.
A woman giving birth.
Roger’s paper flower.
Bellweather injections.
Mary stared.
The memories were mixed between both subjects.
The system could not distinguish original experience from implanted recall.
IDENTITY CONFLICT.
Olivia pressed the ledger to the scanner.
“Run genetic confirmation.”
Voss shouted through the radio.
“Do not do that.”
“Why?” Mary asked.
“Because Melissa’s genetic profile was used to grow tissue for the replacements.”
M-7 and M-12 shared partial DNA.
The system continued.
ORIGINAL SUBJECT PROBABILITY:
M-7: 49.8%
M-12: 49.8%
UNKNOWN SUBJECT: 0.4%
Everyone stared at the final line.
“There is a third woman,” Mary said.
Olivia looked at the patient chairs.
All were empty except two.
Voss became frantic.
“Shut down the system.”
Mary turned toward the radio.
“Who is the unknown subject?”
Voss did not answer.
Roger understood.
“You.”
Dr. Voss went silent.
M-7 looked through the barrier.
“Elaine was treated with Melissa’s neural tissue.”
Mary remembered Voss’s private memories, the moon song, the emotional transfer.
The system recognized a fragment of Melissa inside her.
Olivia entered a command.
“Include Elaine Voss.”
At the federal holding area above, Voss’s implant activated remotely.
Her screams came through the radio.
Lydia woke on the platform.
“Mom?”
Olivia froze.
The girl looked at her.
Not with recognition.
With terror.
“Where is my mom?”
Olivia moved toward her.
“I am your mother.”
Lydia began crying.
“No, you’re not.”
The words struck Olivia physically.
Warren moved closer.
“Let her choose the relationship. Do not force it.”
Olivia looked at the child she had searched for across eight years of erased memory.
Then at the machine she had used to prove ownership.
Slowly, she lowered her hand.
The system alarm changed.
TERMINATION SEQUENCE ARMED.
Mary looked at Voss’s remote data.
The override code was incomplete.
“Elaine, stop it.”
Voss gasped through the radio.
“I need the original patient number.”
Roger shouted, “Which one?”
A voice came from behind them.
“Mine.”
A woman stood in the elevator.
She wore a hospital bracelet labeled M-1.
But the M-1 from Bellweather was still in custody.
This woman looked exactly like Melissa.
She held Henry’s missing rear axle in her hand.
Roger stared at her.
“Who are you?”
She looked at M-7 and M-12.
May you like
“The woman they copied.”
👉 A third woman claiming to be the original Melissa entered the lab with the missing piece of Henry’s toy, but the termination sequence had already begun.
