Chapter 5 - the hunger was part of the plan

Roger refused protective custody unless Henry remained in the same room.
Mary agreed.
They were moved to a state police safe house outside town, while the woman known only as M-12 was taken to a secure hospital under guard.
Captain Warren remained under investigation.
He had withheld evidence, deleted a missing-person report, and allowed Bellweather to control local police activity.
But he had also rescued M-12 and delivered two attackers into state custody.
Mary did not trust him.
She needed what he knew.
They met in the safe house kitchen shortly before dawn.
Roger sat at the table with Henry asleep against his chest. The boy still clutched the toy car, now missing its rear wheel.
Mary placed Bellweather’s schedule on the table.
“Who owns the company?”
Warren poured coffee but did not drink it.
“Officially, Bellweather Foods belongs to a holding group.”
“Unofficially?”
“Dr. Elaine Voss.”
Mary recognized the name.
Voss was a celebrated medical researcher who had funded pediatric hospitals and appeared regularly on television discussing childhood illnesses.
“What does she need from Henry?”
“Bone marrow, stem cells, perhaps something more.”
“For herself?”
“Her daughter.”
Warren opened a confidential medical profile.
The girl’s name was Lydia Voss.
Seven years old.
Born with a rare degenerative blood disorder.
“Henry is a match?” Mary asked.
“An unusually strong one.”
Roger looked up.
“How would they know his blood type?”
Warren hesitated.
Mary saw the answer first.
“Hospital records.”
Roger’s face hardened.
“Henry was born at Saint Mercy.”
“Bellweather funded the maternity wing,” Warren said.
Roger stood so quickly that Henry woke.
“You’re saying they tracked him from birth?”
“I’m saying they maintain a registry of children with valuable genetic traits.”
Mary felt sick.
Henry rubbed his eyes.
“Are we going home?”
Roger forced his voice to soften.
“Not yet.”
“Can we get breakfast?”
The question exposed something Mary had almost overlooked.
The empty refrigerator.
The denied assistance.
Roger’s lost job.
The calculated isolation.
“They starved you,” Mary said.
Roger looked at her.
“Who?”
“Bellweather. They got you fired. They blocked your assistance. They sent men to threaten you.”
Warren nodded.
“They wanted Roger desperate enough to accept an offer.”
“What offer?” Roger asked.
A phone rang inside Warren’s evidence bag.
It belonged to Gavin Cole.
The state investigator monitoring the device answered on speaker.
A woman’s voice said, “Has Hale agreed to the exchange?”
No one spoke.
The caller continued.
“Five hundred thousand dollars for the boy. His wife returned safely after the procedure.”
Roger’s face became white.
Mary signaled for the call to be traced.
Warren answered in Gavin’s voice range as closely as he could.
“He needs more time.”
“He has had thirty-seven days.”
“His wife is becoming difficult.”
The woman laughed softly.
“Melissa has always been difficult.”
Roger closed his eyes.
She was alive.
Mary leaned toward the phone.
“Where is the exchange?”
The caller went silent.
Then the voice changed.
“Sergeant Dalton.”
Mary froze.
The woman knew she was listening.
“You survived the first correction,” the caller said. “Do not assume you will survive another.”
The call ended.
The trace failed.
Henry looked between the adults.
“Was that Mom?”
“No,” Roger said.
“How do you know?”
Roger could not answer.
Mary examined Gavin’s phone.
A new message appeared.
A photograph.
Melissa sat in a metal chair inside a white room. Her hair had been cut short. A newspaper dated that morning rested in her lap.
She was alive.
A second photograph showed a digital scale.
On one side stood bags of food.
On the other, a child’s medical bracelet labeled HENRY HALE.
The message beneath it read:
THE FATHER CHOOSES WHO EATS.
Roger turned away.
Mary gripped the phone.
The cruelty had been deliberate from the beginning. Bellweather wanted Roger weak enough to trade his son for food, money, and Melissa’s return.
They had underestimated one thing.
Henry had walked into the police station before his father surrendered.
A third message arrived.
BRING THE BOY TO WAREHOUSE 4 AT MIDNIGHT.
NO STATE POLICE.
NO FEDERAL CONTACT.
OR MELISSA ENTERS THE NEXT TRIAL.
Warren looked at Mary.
“It is a trap.”
“Of course it is.”
Roger picked up the phone.
“I’m going.”
“No,” Mary said.
“They have my wife.”
“They want your son.”
“I won’t bring Henry.”
“Then they will know immediately.”
Roger looked at his sleeping child.
“I have to do something.”
Mary studied the warehouse map.
There might be another way.
“M-12 said there was a tunnel,” she said.
Warren nodded.
“The food warehouse connects to the old medical complex beneath it.”
“Can you access the plans?”
“Official plans won’t show the lower levels.”
“Olivia found them eight years ago.”
Warren looked toward her.
“She left a map.”
“Where?”
“In the evidence locker you burned tonight.”
“I didn’t burn it.”
Warren’s face changed.
“The map was stored separately. In a place only you would know.”
Mary stared at him.
“I don’t remember the case.”
“That was the point.”
He removed an old photograph from his wallet.
It showed Mary and Olivia standing outside Bellweather. Olivia held a child’s lunchbox decorated with blue stars.
Mary touched the picture.
A memory flashed.
A train platform.
Olivia crying.
A key taped beneath a bench.
Then it vanished.
“Where was this taken?”
“North County Station.”
Mary stood.
The station had been abandoned for six years.
Warren looked at the clock.
They had eighteen hours before the exchange.
Mary reached for her coat.
Roger stood too.
“You’re not leaving me behind.”
“Your face will be recognized.”
“So will yours.”
Mary looked at Henry.
The boy had awakened fully.
He held out the toy car.
“Mom said brave cars always find secret roads.”
Mary took it.
Something rattled inside the hollow body.
The memory card had not been the only thing Melissa had hidden.
Ben opened the toy carefully.
A small brass key fell onto the table.
A number was engraved on it.
Mary remembered the abandoned train station.
May you like
Locker 214.
👉 Melissa had hidden a second clue inside Henry’s toy, and the key might unlock the only route into Bellweather’s underground medical facility.
