Chapter 14 - red Haven
Red Haven lay beneath the ruins of a military hospital abandoned after a fire twenty years earlier.
The public believed the underground levels had been sealed.
Anna knew a service entrance through an old water-treatment tunnel.
Noah contacted the independent prosecutor and sent partial copies of the evidence drive before the signal disappeared.
“If we don’t come out,” he said, “someone else will know where to look.”
Rachel sat between Lily and Sophie in the transport vehicle.
Neither girl had been told they were responsible for opening anything.
They were told only that children needed help and adults would protect them.
Lily held Captain Buttons.
Sophie held the rabbit’s other ear.
Rebecca sat across from them, pale from blood loss.
Lily looked at her.
“Are you the bad mommy?”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The adults went still.
Rebecca continued.
“I was hurt when I was little, and I grew up believing hurting people was how I stayed safe. That was wrong.”
“Are you sorry?”
“Yes.”
“Does sorry fix my legs?”
“No.”
Lily considered.
“Then you have to do more.”
Rebecca nodded.
“I will.”
They reached Red Haven before dawn.
The tunnel entrance opened into a decontamination chamber.
Sophie entered a code she remembered from Vivian.
The internal doors unlocked.
Anna led them toward the central laboratory.
Children’s voices came through the ventilation system.
Mason, Jonah’s missing friend, was among seven subjects strapped into upright medical frames.
Vivian Cross supervised technicians.
Malcolm Harrison stood beside a glass control room.
And Senator Charles Weller watched from an elevated platform.
The senator saw Anna first.
“My daughter.”
“You told the country I was dead.”
“You chose betrayal.”
“I chose children.”
Weller looked at Lily.
“There she is.”
Rachel moved in front of the girl.
Weller smiled.
“You believe motherhood is standing between a child and history.”
“I believe it is standing between a child and you.”
Malcolm activated the laboratory barriers.
Steel walls descended, separating Noah and Grace from the children.
Anna entered a code into the evidence drive.
“The encryption key.”
Malcolm held up a tablet.
“Only if Lily and Sophie authenticate the system.”
Caroline examined the restrained children.
“What is the trial?”
Malcolm’s eyes brightened.
“Controlled structural stress followed by regenerative intervention.”
“You are going to injure them.”
“We are going to prove they can recover.”
Mason stared at Lily through the glass.
“Don’t let them start.”
Lily’s breathing accelerated.
Rachel knelt in front of her.
“You do not have to do anything.”
Sophie looked at the control stations.
“I know how to stop the frames.”
Vivian stepped forward.
“Sophie, come to me.”
The child stared at the woman who had raised her.
“Did you ever love me?”
Vivian’s expression changed.
“I gave you everything.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Vivian lowered her voice.
“I loved what you could become.”
Sophie moved closer to Lily instead.
The girls placed their hands on separate scanners.
Rachel tried to stop them.
Sophie whispered, “Trust us.”
The system recognized them.
FINAL GENERATION VERIFIED.
Malcolm smiled.
“Begin.”
But Sophie entered a hidden command Vivian had taught her for emergency shutdowns.
Lily repeated the sequence she had heard through the bedroom wall.
The children’s frames released.
Mason fell forward.
Caroline and Rachel ran to him.
Alarms erupted.
Anna connected the evidence drive.
Malcolm’s tablet displayed the encryption key.
She transmitted the files.
Across the country, journalists, judges, and international medical organizations received the complete archive.
Senator Weller drew a gun.
Noah broke through the barrier and tackled him.
Grace restrained Malcolm.
Vivian ran toward the emergency exit.
Rebecca blocked her path.
“You taught me to become you,” Rebecca said.
Vivian raised a weapon.
Rebecca did not move.
“You cannot frighten me with the life I already survived.”
Grace reached them and disarmed Vivian.
The laboratory began shutting down.
Anna searched the system.
“Where are the other facilities?”
Malcolm laughed from the floor.
“Red Haven is only the oldest.”
A map appeared.
Dozens of red points illuminated across the country.
Then across the world.
The Harrison program had been replicated.
Weller smiled through a bleeding lip.
“You cannot expose what governments have already decided to protect.”
Noah’s phone regained signal.
News alerts flooded the screen.
The archive was public.
Senator Weller’s campaign collapsed within minutes.
Federal judges issued warrants.
But another alert appeared beneath them.
Multiple medical facilities had begun destroying records.
The network was reacting.
Lily walked two unsteady steps toward Mason.
Rachel caught her before she fell.
The child smiled faintly.
“I moved.”
Caroline examined her.
“You did.”
For one hopeful second, the room felt different.

She opened it.
A prenatal image appeared.

A recent photograph loaded.
A six-year-old girl stood inside a white room holding a stuffed rabbit identical to Captain Buttons.
She had Lily’s face.
On the back wall was a red door.
