Chapter 9 - the children on the plane

Noah kept his weapon trained on Malcolm Harrison.

“Release the girl.”

Malcolm held the injector steady.

“Six minutes are becoming five.”

Caroline watched Lily’s breathing.

The child was weakening, but the change could have been caused by fear, medication, or a real reaction. Malcolm relied on uncertainty.

“What compound did you give her?” Caroline asked.

“A neuromuscular regulator developed by Harrison Medical.”

“Name it.”

“You won’t find it in public databases.”

“Then you cannot prove she needs that syringe.”

Malcolm’s eyes narrowed.

“I can prove it by waiting.”

Rachel crawled toward the stretcher.

Vivian saw her and kicked the handle away.

Grace moved sideways toward the plane.

One of the guards aimed at her.

Noah fired first, striking the man’s weapon from his hand.

Chaos erupted.

Rachel lunged at Vivian.

Caroline ran toward Lily.

Malcolm dragged the child backward toward the jet stairs.

Captain Buttons fell to the ground.

The stuffed rabbit landed in a puddle.

Lily cried out.

“Bunny!”

Malcolm looked down for one second.

Caroline struck his wrist.

The injector flew beneath the plane.

Lily collapsed into Caroline’s arms.

Noah tackled Malcolm while Grace restrained Vivian.

Rachel reached her daughter.

“Is she breathing?”

“Yes.”

Caroline carried Lily into the ambulance and connected her to portable monitoring.

The heart rate was irregular but not failing.

“Find the syringe!” she shouted.

An officer recovered it from beneath the aircraft.

Inside the jet, the children continued pounding on the windows.

Grace opened the door.

Three children were restrained in medical seats.

A fourth seat was empty.

Files beside it were labeled SUBJECT M-4.

“Mason,” Grace whispered.

Rebecca had said Mason died.

But a flight manifest listed him as an arriving passenger at another location.

Perhaps the house fire had hidden an abduction, not a death.

Noah searched Malcolm.

Inside his coat was a satellite phone, multiple passports, and a photograph of seven children standing beside a woman whose face had been scratched away.

The photograph was dated seven years earlier.

Rachel looked at the woman’s outline.

“That’s Rebecca.”

Noah turned toward Malcolm.

“Why was she with the children before Lily was born?”

Malcolm smiled despite the blood on his lip.

“Because Rebecca was our first successful subject.”

Rebecca’s history changed again.

Her facial and spinal injuries had not begun with an accident.

She had been part of Harrison’s childhood program.

At the hospital, she admitted the truth.

“My parents enrolled me when I was eight. Harrison said I had the same marker as the other children.”

“What did he do?” an investigator asked.

“He operated on my spine. When something went wrong, they staged a car accident to explain the scars.”

“Why did you later work for him?”

“Because he told me the procedure saved me. Because my parents believed him. Because I had nowhere else to place the pain.”

She had grown from victim into participant, repeating the structure that created her.

At the airfield, Caroline analyzed the injector.

“It contains a reversal agent,” she said. “But Lily may not need the full dose.”

Malcolm refused to provide instructions.

Ethan guided Caroline by phone from the hospital.

They administered a carefully calculated amount.

Lily’s heart rhythm stabilized.

Rachel held her hand.

“You’re staying with me.”

Lily looked at Malcolm being placed into a police vehicle.

“Is he going away?”

“Yes,” Rachel said.

Malcolm heard her.

He laughed.

“You arrested a man who officially died three years ago. By morning, no court will know which identity to charge.”

Noah leaned into the vehicle.

“We’ll start with kidnapping.”

“The children belong to the foundation.”

“No child belongs to you.”

Malcolm’s expression remained calm.

“Then ask Rachel why Lily’s DNA does not match hers.”

Rachel went still.

Caroline looked at her.

“We need to confirm that before accepting anything he says.”

Malcolm continued.

“The baby Rachel delivered was Subject L-6.”

“Where is she?” Rachel demanded.

“Alive.”

Rachel’s knees weakened.

Lily looked between the adults.

“Am I not Mommy’s?”

Rachel immediately held her face.

“You are mine.”

“But did I come from you?”

Rachel could not lie.

“I don’t know yet.”

Lily’s eyes filled.

Caroline knelt beside them.

“Families are not erased by a test.”

Malcolm watched through the police car window.

“No. They are erased by records.”

At the airfield office, Grace found a shipping container filled with archived files.

One folder contained Rachel’s original hospital records.

The baby she delivered had been transferred under the designation L-6.

Lily had been born to another woman only twenty minutes later.

The mother’s name was redacted.

A court order attached to the file prohibited disclosure under national security authority.

Noah stared at the seal.

“This is not only a private medical conspiracy.”

The authorization came from a federal biomedical program.

At the bottom of the document was the signature of a government official.

Senator Charles Weller.

He was currently campaigning for president.

Caroline looked toward the children being rescued from the plane.

“How many people protected this?”

Noah answered quietly.

“Enough to make Harrison believe arrest does not matter.”

His phone rang.

The county police chief ordered him to release Malcolm Harrison and Vivian Cross to federal custody.

“On whose authority?” Noah asked.

“Department of Health Security.”

“That department doesn’t exist.”

“It does tonight.”

Across the runway, black federal vehicles entered through the gate.

The lead agent stepped out and displayed credentials.

“We are taking possession of the suspects, the children, and all medical evidence.”

Lily gripped Rachel’s sleeve.

Behind the federal agent, one rescued boy began screaming.

“That’s not the police!”

👉 A federal team arrived to seize everyone connected to the case, but one of the rescued children recognized them as part of Harrison’s program.
