Chapter 7

Grant tried to control the room the way he controlled every room.

With posture first.

Voice second.

Threat third.

He straightened his black tie and looked around the table.

“This is a family matter.”

No one responded.

The phrase had expired.

He turned to me.

“Claire, you are upset.”

I held the ledger against my chest.

“I am accurate.”

Madison spoke before he could stop her.

“You said she had no authority over estate accounts.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“Not now.”

“When, Grant?”

Her voice cracked.

“After I slap her again?”

Every guest looked at her.

Madison heard herself then.

Heard the ugliness.

Heard the legal shape of her own sentence.

Her face went pale.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Grant pointed toward the hallway.

“Madison, go.”

She looked at him.

And for the first time, she understood what I had understood for years.

Grant protected women only while they were useful.

Madison had been useful as a weapon against me.

Now she was becoming evidence.

She did not leave.

Vivian stepped in.

“Claire, you have made your point.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

“I have made the first one.”

I opened the ledger again and removed a folded document.

Grant’s body went rigid.

That was not an invoice.

That was not a receipt.

That was the signed acknowledgment Rosemary had made him sign before our wedding.

I had not seen it until she gave me the ledger.

It stated that any Whitmore estate asset rescued, restored, refinanced, or preserved using my separate funds would remain subject to reimbursement and claim priority if the marriage ended due to fraud, abuse, or misrepresentation.

Grant had signed it.

So had Vivian.

So had Rosemary.

So had Harold as witness.

Vivian whispered, “Rosemary was senile.”

Harold’s voice cut through the room.

“Rosemary was sharper than all of you.”

A few guests inhaled.

Grant stepped toward the document.

I moved it out of reach.

“Do not touch another paper that belongs to me.”

His expression changed.

For a second, the polished husband vanished.

What remained was fear with teeth.

“You will destroy this family.”

I met his eyes.

“No.”

May you like

“I’m returning it to its actual budget.”
