Chapter 8

The first vendor call came before dessert.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The florist.

The valet company.

The lighting crew.

The private chef’s agency.

The security coordinator.

Everyone had received payment suspension notices.

Not cancellation.

Not yet.

Suspension.

That was Ruth Caldwell’s style.

My attorney believed panic was more useful when people had time to make mistakes.

Grant’s phone kept vibrating.

He finally answered one call near the sideboard.

“Yes?”

His voice was low.

Then lower.

“No, do not release any statement.”

Pause.

“I said no statement.”

Another pause.

His eyes flicked toward me.

“No, my wife does not control the company.”

I raised one eyebrow.

He corrected himself.

“She controls certain estate accounts.”

Madison heard that.

Vivian heard it.

So did every guest pretending not to.

The lie was shrinking in real time.

Grant hung up and walked back.

“Claire, if you walk out with that ledger, you are escalating this beyond repair.”

I looked at my wedding ring sitting beside my plate.

Small.

Expensive.

Useless.

“Grant, Madison’s hand was in my hair ten minutes ago.”

“There is no repair in this room.”

Madison whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I looked at her.

She flinched before I spoke.

“No, you’re scared.”

She did not deny it.

That honesty was the first intelligent thing she had done all evening.

Vivian sank slowly into her chair.

The wineglass in front of her trembled.

“What do you want?”

I turned to my mother-in-law.

For seven years, she had asked that question as an accusation.

What do you want from this family?

Their name?

Their house?

Their approval?

Tonight, I finally had an answer.

“My name off every unpaid debt you call tradition.”

Grant said, “Claire.”

I continued.

“My money out of your shell accounts.”

Vivian froze.

“My signature off every family statement written by men who lie with cufflinks.”

Grant’s mouth tightened.

“And Madison’s access removed from every account my money touched.”

Madison turned toward Grant.

“Access?”

I smiled without warmth.

“Grant didn’t tell you?”

Her face changed.

Good.
