Chapter 7

Rebecca called while the investigators were in the room.

My phone vibrated beside Lily’s bed.

Her name appeared.

Lily saw it and turned her face into the pillow.

That was enough.

I did not answer immediately.

Agent Blake asked, “Do you want the call documented?”

“Yes.”

He activated the secure recording system.

Then nodded.

I answered.

“Marcus.”

Rebecca sounded breathless.

“You’re there.”

“Yes.”

“My parents said federal agents are harassing them.”

“Lily said you closed the curtain.”

Silence.

Long enough that even Charles looked toward the phone.

Then Rebecca whispered, “She doesn’t understand what she saw.”

“What did she see?”

“You cannot question her like this.”

“I asked you.”

Another silence.

“She was already upset.”

“Before what?”

Rebecca began crying.

Once, that sound would have made me protect her before understanding anything.

Not now.

“Marcus, you need to take Lily somewhere safe.”

“I’m beside her.”

“No. Away from my family.”

Charles stepped forward.

“End the call.”

Agent Blake raised one hand.

Charles stopped.

I asked Rebecca, “Who hurt her?”

Her breathing changed.

“I tried to stop it.”

Lily began shaking beneath the blanket.

I moved the phone farther from her bed.

“By closing the curtain?”

Rebecca sobbed once.

Then the line disconnected.

No confession.

No full explanation.

But enough to destroy the claim that nothing happened.

Evelyn sank into a chair.

Charles stared at the floor.

Agent Blake saved the recording.

I wanted to call Rebecca back.

Demand names.

Demand location.

Demand how a mother could conceal danger from her own child.

Instead, I returned to Lily.

She needed a father, not an interrogator.

“Did Mom say I lied?” she asked.

“No.”

“Is she coming?”

“I don’t know.”

Lily looked terrified.

I placed my hand beside hers on the blanket.

“No one comes near you unless you say they can.”

The federal agent heard me.

So did the Sterlings.
