The first name surfaced from an audio file recovered at the Sterling estate.
Not the attacker’s name.
A lawyer’s.
Gordon Price had represented Charles for twenty-three years.
He handled foundation disputes, employee settlements, medical confidentiality agreements, and every family crisis the Sterlings wanted converted into paperwork.
Agent Blake played only a few seconds privately for me.
Rebecca’s voice.
“She saw him.”
Then Gordon’s.
“Children can be redirected.”
Then Evelyn.
“Marcus cannot find out before the deployment ends.”
My hands closed into fists.
Agent Blake stopped the recording.
“There is more.”
“Play it.”
“Not here.”
“Why?”
“Because your daughter is ten feet away, and the remaining content involves adults discussing her as a problem.”
I looked toward Lily.
She was sleeping at last, one hand still holding the edge of my sleeve.
I forced my hands open.
“What do you need from me?”
“Discipline.”
I almost laughed.
That was the one thing the Army had trained into me too deeply to lose.
Agent Blake continued.
“The Sterling family has local influence. We need them to believe the investigation is narrower than it is.”
“They know you have the records.”
“They do not know where the backups are.”
“Do I?”
“No.”
That was smart.
No single person could be pressured into surrendering everything.
The investigator showed me a map of evidence preservation points.
A federal server.
A military family advocacy archive.
An external medical regulator.
A sealed court repository.
Copies existed in places Charles Sterling could not reach through a hospital board or phone call.
Evelyn had realized part of that when she recognized her threat playing from my phone.
Charles realized the rest when Agent Blake received a message and said quietly:
“The Asheville office confirms receipt.”
Charles turned.
“Receipt of what?”
The agent did not answer.
The fear on Charles’s face deepened.
