Chapter 4

The assault began over a signature.
Brandon invited me to dinner in my own dining room.
Amber lit candles.
Opened an expensive bottle of wine.
Ordered the staff to leave early.
I should have recognized the setup.
Instead, I believed my son was trying to reconcile after weeks of tension.
He waited until dessert before placing the documents beside my plate.
A property transfer agreement.
Prepared without Richard.
Written to move control of the trust into a company Brandon had created three months earlier.
I turned the first page.
Then closed the folder.
“No.”
He smiled as though I had misunderstood.
“You haven’t read it.”
“I read enough.”
“It protects the family.”
“It transfers the house to you.”
“Eventually.”
“Immediately.”
Amber leaned forward.
“We need stability.”
“You live here without paying for anything.”
“That is not stability,” she said. “That is dependence.”
For once, she was correct.
Just not in the way she intended.
I stood and carried the folder toward the fireplace.
Brandon stepped into my path.
“Sign it.”
“No.”
“You are sixty-eight years old.”
“I am aware.”
“What happens if you fall tomorrow? If you become confused?”
His concern sounded rehearsed.
I looked at Amber.
She did not meet my eyes.
“You have already spoken to someone about having me declared incompetent.”
Brandon’s face changed.
Only slightly.
Enough.
I moved toward the door.
He grabbed my arm.
I pulled free.
Then came the first blow.
Not the worst.
The most revealing.
He struck me and waited.
He expected shock to become obedience.
When I remained standing, he struck again.
Amber did not call for help.
She stood near the sofa and said, “Just sign it, Franklin.”
I remember the fireplace light.
The taste of blood.
The framed photograph of Brandon at eight years old smiling from the mantel.
I did not count every blow.
The medical report later did.
Thirty points of impact, the doctor said.
Some from fists.
Some from hitting the floor and furniture.
Brandon stopped only when the housekeeper returned for a forgotten phone and screamed from the doorway.
He looked down at me.
Breathing hard.
Then said, “You made this happen.”

That sentence ended my role as the father who cleaned up after him.
