Chapter 8

Amber recovered before Brandon.

She always understood material danger faster.

“What happens to the furnishings?”

Richard looked toward me.

I answered.

“The items listed in the private inventory have already been removed.”

Her eyes moved around the room.

Only then did she notice.

Caroline’s jewelry case was gone from the antique cabinet.

The signed first-edition books were missing from the library shelves.

Several paintings had been replaced with high-quality reproductions.

The family silver no longer filled the dining-room display.

My assistant had removed personal property during Brandon’s absence two days earlier.

Quietly.

Legally.

Without damaging anything.

Amber’s face tightened.

“You entered our rooms?”

“My employees entered my property.”

She flushed.

“You had no right to touch my belongings.”

“Your belongings remain where you left them.”

The distinction frightened her.

Everything valuable she had assumed would become hers had never belonged to her.

Brandon closed the folder.

“This is punishment.”

“No.”

“You want to embarrass me.”

“No.”

“Then why sell the house?”

I looked at him.

“Because you beat me over it.”

Amber’s face changed.

She glanced toward Natalie.

Then Richard.

She had preferred the assault remain unnamed.

A private disagreement.

A family incident.

Words determine whether cruelty survives socially.

“Franklin,” she said softly, “this is not helping anyone.”

“You watched.”

“I was afraid.”

“You told me to sign.”

Her eyes dropped.

Brandon stepped between us.

“Do not blame her.”

The sentence almost sounded noble.

Then he continued.

“You were forcing us into a desperate position.”

Richard’s expression hardened for the first time.

“Mr. Reeves, not receiving a mansion is not desperation.”

Brandon looked toward him.

“You have no idea what my father promised.”

I answered.

“I promised to love you.”

His jaw tightened.

“That was not enough for you.”

Silence filled the room.

I had spent years believing money compensated for the places I failed emotionally after Caroline died.
