Chapter 17 - THE HOUSEI served Brian and Melissa written notice ending permission to live in my home.

Thirty days.
No midnight eviction.
No luggage on lawn.
No utilities cut.
They moved out in twenty-two.
Back to their condominium.
The renovation had been complete.
Their real problem was monthly carrying cost.
They eventually sold it and rented something smaller.
That was their choice.
Before leaving, Melissa returned her card.
Brian had already cut his up.
He placed it on the dining table.
“Happy?”
“No.”
“What do you want?”
“Honesty.”
“You have it.”
I laughed.
“Parts.”
He looked exhausted.
“What else?”
“Did Mom know the DNA result was real?”
His eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Years.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“She said she would.”
“Did you stop her?”
He looked away.
“Brian.”
“I told her if she contacted April again, I would stop coming around.”
That hurt.
Elaine had been sick by then?
No.
This was years before cancer.
She had to choose between continued contact with her son and a boy she had just learned might be her grandson.
Brian weaponized access.
Not legally.
Emotionally.
He whispered:
“I was scared.”
“So was she.”
He began crying.
May you like
I did not comfort him.
Not that day.
