A ceramic dog bowl.
I stared.
He immediately panicked.
“It’s a joke.”
Dennis nearly fell out of his chair laughing.
The bowl said:
GRANDPA’S SNACKS
I laughed until my side hurt.
“Your mother approved this?”
April said:
“Absolutely not.”
Eli looked proud.
“Brian told me about Max.”
I froze briefly.
Then smiled.
“Max was smarter than most of us.”
We filled the bowl with pretzels.
