Chapter 6 - THE TEDDY BEAR RECORDINGS

The storytelling bear held more than threats.
Emily had learned how to activate its recording function by pressing one paw twice. Vanessa believed the toy was broken because the speaker produced no sound.
Emily had lowered the volume.
Each night, she placed the bear near the bedroom door and recorded whatever happened in the hallway.
One file captured Vanessa speaking with Martin Dale on the phone.
“The child is not reacting strongly enough,” Vanessa said.
Martin answered:
“Then make the baby the trigger. Courts move quickly when an infant is involved.”
“What if Richard returns early?”
“He never returns early.”
“He might this time. His finance office asked questions.”
“Then use his temper. He has military training, money, and a dead wife’s company. A frightened judge will believe he controls the home.”
Vanessa asked whether the kitchen camera could be erased.
Martin told her to cover the lens and reset the cloud password afterward.
She covered it.
She forgot the audio continued uploading through a separate office account.
Another recording captured the night Emily was forced to sleep beside Alex’s bassinet.
The baby cried for nearly an hour.
Emily whispered:
“Please wake up.”
Vanessa answered from the doorway:
“You wanted your father to think you were mature. Mature girls take care of babies.”
“I’m tired.”
“You’ll be more tired at Bright Harbor.”
“What’s that?”
“The place children go when families stop wanting them.”
Richard stopped the file.
He could not continue.
Emily watched his face.
“Are you mad?”
“Yes.”
“At me?”
“No.”
“You look like you want to break something.”
Richard breathed slowly.
“That feeling is mine to control.”
The words mattered after she had seen him slap Vanessa.
He did not want his protection to resemble another adult’s loss of control.
He placed the bear on the table.
“I should not have hit her.”
Emily frowned.
“She was hurting us.”
“She was. I needed to stop her. I could have moved her away without striking her.”
“Will the police take you too?”
“They may ask more questions. I will tell the truth.”
Emily thought for a moment.
“Vanessa always says the truth only counts when it helps you.”
Richard looked at her.
“She is wrong.”
The teddy bear contained the file that destroyed Vanessa’s claim that she acted from fear.
Two days before the kitchen incident, she rehearsed her statement aloud.
Emily is jealous of Alex.
She took him without permission.
I tried to intervene.
Richard became violent.
I am frightened for both children.
Martin corrected her wording through the phone.
“Do not say you are angry. Say you are afraid. Fear makes you protective. Anger makes you look involved.”
Vanessa repeated the sentence until she sounded convincing.
Mara played the rehearsal during a second interview.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You recorded me illegally.”
“The recording belonged to a child inside her own bedroom.”
“Martin told me the petition was necessary.”
“You followed his advice because you wanted Emily’s trust.”
“I wanted stability.”
“You had airline tickets.”
“I planned to take Alex somewhere safe.”
“Without his father?”
Vanessa requested a break.
Her confidence had begun to fracture, but she still believed Martin could rescue the legal plan.
Then police traced his car to a private airfield.
He had purchased a ticket using a false name.
The departure was scheduled for that evening.
Mara’s team reached the airfield before boarding.
Martin was not there.
His suitcase remained beside the gate.
Inside was the red Hale family file.
The laptop was missing.
A note rested on top of the papers:
May you like
Vanessa acted alone.
👉 Martin abandoned the evidence but escaped with the device containing the forged trust records and court filings.
