“I expected this day,” she said.
Elena stood across the office.
“Did you access the server?”
“Yes.”
The admission hollowed the room.
Margaret had helped create the original school protection network twenty-two years earlier. It began after a politically connected teenager assaulted three students and the district attempted to hide it.
Margaret, then a young attorney, built an independent evidence archive to preserve complaints outside school control.
Senator Bell discovered it.
Richard’s father funded it.
Over time, the archive changed.
Instead of preserving evidence, powerful families used it to identify witnesses before they could speak.
Margaret remained inside the system because she believed she could limit the damage.
“You allowed children to be profiled,” Elena said.
“I redirected cases away from worse outcomes.”
“You decided which child could be sacrificed.”
“I prevented many removals.”
“And Noah?”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“I failed him.”
“Did you create the account in my name?”
“No.”
“The login came from your chambers.”
“My access key was copied.”
“By whom?”
Margaret looked toward the portrait behind her desk.
It showed her late husband, Malcolm Sloan.
Warren Bell had claimed Malcolm Sloan was Richard’s legal partner? Different story names. Here Margaret’s husband could be Jonathan Sloan. But we have Chief Justice Margaret Sloan and maybe no prior Sloan in story except none. Fine.
Jonathan Sloan died six years earlier after a stroke.
Margaret revealed he had maintained the founder server.
After his death, someone continued using his biometric access.
Only three people possessed the recovery key:
Margaret.
Senator Bell.
Elena’s late husband, Michael Ward.
Elena stared.
“Michael knew?”
“He investigated the system before his death.”
Michael died in a winter car accident four years earlier.
Margaret told Elena he had been returning from a judicial conference.
In truth, he had been meeting Noah Bennett’s mother.
Michael believed Bell was using school complaints to control family-court cases.
He copied the founder key.
Three days later, his vehicle left an icy road.
The crash was ruled accidental.
Elena felt the past reopen beneath her.
“You let me believe his death had nothing to do with my work.”
“I had no proof.”
“You had enough to hide this from me.”
“I thought Bell would target Sophie if you continued.”
“He did anyway.”
Margaret’s protection had delayed truth and preserved danger.
Dana searched Michael’s archived courthouse files.
One encrypted folder remained.
The password was Sophie’s birth date.
Inside was a video recorded the night before his death.
Michael spoke directly to Elena.
“Margaret is not the founder. The system predates her. Someone inside the school board created it after the first Caldwell case.”
He held up a photograph.
A young Richard stood beside Senator Bell, Margaret, and another woman.
Elena recognized her.
Claire Dalton.
The staff witness who recorded Max’s confession had known Richard for decades.
Claire was not simply a frightened teacher.
