The Operator Heard Everything / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - THE SECOND LOCKED DOORRachel and Noah were moved after midnight.

No marked vehicles were used. No hospital computer contained the destination. Hale selected the house himself and carried the address inside a sealed envelope until they arrived.

The property stood at the end of a quiet street outside Philadelphia. Its windows were reinforced, and federal officers occupied the homes on either side.

Rachel checked every lock.

Noah placed his school lanyard inside an evidence bag and refused to wear it again.

“You don’t need it,” Rachel said.

“I liked it before Dad used it.”

She knelt beside him.

“You’re allowed to like something again after someone used it to hurt you.”

He looked unconvinced.

Healing would not arrive as quickly as rescue.

Rachel prepared the guest bedroom, then sat beside Noah until his breathing slowed. She remained awake after he slept.

At 3:46 a.m., Erin called through the secure line.

“We found who activated the tracker.”

Rachel stepped into the hallway.

“Gavin?”

“No. The signal began at Noah’s school six weeks ago.”

The tracker had been placed inside the lanyard before the classroom recorder was issued. Someone working at the school knew Daniel’s plan before Noah accidentally captured it.

Hale searched school employment records.

One temporary counselor had been hired through Mercer Development’s charitable foundation.

Her name was Kelsey Moore.

Kelsey had access to Noah long before she claimed to enter Daniel’s life as an assistant.

When confronted at the hospital, she admitted using the school position to observe the family.

“I needed to know whether Daniel was hurting him,” she said.

“You placed a tracker on a child,” Hale replied.

“To protect him.”

“Who had access to the signal?”

Kelsey looked toward the camera.

“I thought only I did.”

Her account connected to a second administrator.

The username was E.WALSH.

Erin stared at the result from the communications center.

“I never created that account.”

Someone had copied her identity after the emergency call.

The secure phone in Rachel’s hand crackled.

Erin’s voice changed.

“Rachel, listen carefully. Do not open your front door.”

Rachel froze.

A vehicle had arrived outside the protected house. Two people wearing federal jackets approached the porch.

The officers stationed next door did not respond to their radios.

“They say they’re here to relocate us,” Rachel whispered.

“No transfer was ordered.”

One of the figures knocked.

“Mrs. Mercer? Detective Hale sent us.”

Rachel moved toward Noah’s bedroom.

He was already awake.

Heavy footsteps crossed the porch.

The doorknob turned once.

Then stopped.

Rachel pulled Noah into the bathroom and locked the door.

The room was smaller than the one at home.

No window.

No second exit.

Her secure phone remained connected to Erin.

“They know we’re inside,” Rachel whispered.

The stranger outside walked slowly down the hall.

A woman’s voice called Noah’s name.

He gripped Rachel’s arm.

“That’s Ms. Moore.”

Kelsey was supposed to be under police guard.

The footsteps stopped outside the bathroom.

The woman spoke again.

“Rachel, Gavin has Daniel. Open the door and I’ll explain.”

Erin’s breathing sharpened through the phone.

“Do not answer her.”

A second voice came from the hallway.

Male.

Calm.

“You’re making this harder than it has to be.”

Rachel stared at the lock.

It was not Daniel’s voice.

It was Detective Hale’s.

Noah covered his mouth to stop himself from crying.

Rachel looked down at the active emergency-call screen.

The caller identification no longer displayed Erin Walsh.

It displayed:

GAVIN REECE — CONNECTED

From the other side of the door, someone inserted a key.

The lock began to turn.
