Chapter 6 - THE CALL MADE FROM RACHEL’S NUMBERPolice moved Erin into protective custody.
Before leaving the dispatch center, she copied the complete technical log from Rachel’s call. It showed Gavin’s override, Erin’s manual bypass, and a second command entered after officers reached the house.
Someone had attempted to cancel the ambulance.
The command used Daniel’s credentials from Mercer Development’s private emergency account.
His company maintained contracts with the county for construction-site incidents, giving him limited access to automated alerts.
Gavin had expanded that access secretly.
Together, they could manipulate which emergencies appeared legitimate.
Erin reviewed Melissa’s old case.
The first police unit assigned to her home was redirected to a false traffic collision. The ambulance was sent to the wrong street.
The delays were not mistakes.
Gavin had shaped them.
Rachel listened while Erin explained from the hospital.
“You saved us.”
“I almost didn’t.”
“You bypassed him.”
“I should have questioned the override sooner.”
Rachel shook her head.
“Daniel trained everyone around him to doubt what they saw. You didn’t.”
That evening, a call reached the hospital from Rachel’s phone number.
Rachel’s phone remained inside a police evidence bag.
The caller sounded exactly like her.
“I’m taking Noah home,” the voice told the nurses’ station. “My husband and I resolved the misunderstanding.”
The staff member nearly began discharge procedures before seeing the police restriction.
Daniel had created a copy of Rachel’s voice using saved messages.
He also sent a video showing a woman with Rachel’s hairstyle entering the Mercer house. Her face remained turned from the camera, but the footage was convincing enough to suggest Rachel had returned voluntarily.
The purpose was clear.
Confusion.
If witnesses could not determine which message came from Rachel, every authentic statement became easier to challenge.
Daniel’s attorney issued a public statement claiming Rachel suffered a severe reaction to medication she administered herself.
He described Daniel as a frightened father who fled because Kelsey threatened him with a weapon.
Kelsey had no weapon when police detained her.
That did not stop the story from spreading.
Then Daniel released edited portions of Noah’s lanyard recording. The clips made Kelsey sound like the architect of the plan and removed Gavin’s instructions.
Hale feared a jury might hear contradictory recordings and assume none were trustworthy.
Erin provided the solution.
Emergency calls were timestamped, encrypted, and mirrored automatically across state servers. Daniel could imitate Rachel’s voice, but he could not insert himself into the original call without leaving a cryptographic mismatch.
His pounding on the door, his threats, and Kelsey’s warning were preserved together.
Daniel’s attorney could argue about motive.
He could not argue that Daniel had not been there.
Hale received a location alert from the black SUV.
Its navigation system connected briefly near an unfinished Mercer Development subdivision.
Police entered the site.
They found Gavin’s wife’s vehicle hidden inside a garage.
Gavin was not there.
Daniel was.
He stood inside an unfinished kitchen holding a lighter near the final box of Melissa’s records.
Officers ordered him to drop it.
Daniel smiled.
“You think this ends because Rachel called 911?”
He surrendered without resistance.
No sign of Gavin appeared.
During the search, officers found a burner phone inside Daniel’s coat.
The most recent call had been made to Kelsey’s protective-housing number.
She was supposed to be at a location known only to police.
Hale contacted the guarding officers.
No one answered.
A live video arrived from Kelsey’s phone.
She sat inside a moving car beside Gavin.
Her face was bruised.
Gavin looked toward the camera.
“Tell Erin she should have followed procedure.”
