Chapter 12 - The message in the archive

Daniel’s protective vest stopped most of the bullet’s force.

He remained conscious, but his breathing became shallow as Reed’s agents pulled him behind the armored vehicle. Claire pressed both hands against his back, searching for blood.

“Stay with me.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Which me?”

“The one who remembers the blue room.”

His mouth moved in a weak smile.

“That room was too small.”

“You always complained.”

“You took all the blankets.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

For those few seconds, he was her brother again.

Then his pupils widened and Malcolm’s cold awareness returned.

“Marcus will fire again.”

Claire looked toward the roof.

Marcus had disappeared.

Adrian used the confusion to run toward the forest. Evelyn attempted to follow, but Claire stopped her.

“Let Reed handle him.”

“He knows where Thomas is.”

“We don’t know that Father is alive.”

Evelyn’s face revealed more than her words.

Claire stared at her.

“You believe he is.”

Before Evelyn could answer, the helicopter landed beyond the outer fence. This time genuine federal teams emerged, responding to the archive release. Adrian’s remaining men surrendered or scattered into the trees.

Celeste disappeared during the confusion.

Her stretcher lay empty near the facility entrance, one restraint cut cleanly through.

Claire felt no surprise.

Celeste always prepared an exit.

The federal archive response team established a secure command area. Daniel was moved into an armored medical vehicle, where doctors treated the impact trauma. Claire refused evacuation until the newly released files were reviewed.

A senior federal investigator opened the primary message.

Thomas Hart appeared on the screen.

The recording had been made inside the family library. He looked older than he had on the day of his supposed death.

The date stamp showed it was recorded three months ago.

“Claire and Daniel,” Thomas began, “if you are seeing this together, then Lazarus has reached the stage I feared.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Claire could not move.

Her father continued.

“My death twelve years ago was staged with Evelyn’s assistance.”

Claire turned toward her mother.

“You held me while I cried over him.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

The recording answered.

“Malcolm Voss did not die in the laboratory explosion. He transferred fragments of his neural map into Daniel during the unauthorized treatments. I knew Malcolm would eventually attempt a complete transfer.”

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

“I disappeared to build a countermeasure.”

Claire felt anger rise through the shock.

He had allowed his children to mourn him.

He had left Daniel to fight a disease and an invading identity.

He had left Claire to carry the company.

“I believed distance would protect you,” Thomas said. “I was wrong.”

A diagram appeared beside him.

It showed the Lazarus network connecting clinics, hospitals, research centers and private military contractors across several countries.

“The program is controlled by a consortium called Continuum. Adrian Keller represents its corporate branch. Celeste served as an acquisition agent. Malcolm Voss designed the original transfer process.”

“What did you do?” Claire whispered at the screen.

Thomas seemed to answer.

“I developed an identity lock—a neurological pattern capable of preventing memory overwrite. But it requires a naturally stable emotional bond between two genetically related subjects.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

Their connection had stabilized him.

They were the countermeasure.

“The archive contains the location of the final laboratory,” Thomas said. “Do not come unless Daniel can recognize Claire without prompting. If Malcolm controls him, the laboratory will become Continuum’s.”

The recording ended.

A map coordinate appeared.

Evelyn immediately recognized it.

“The island.”

“What island?” Reed asked.

“Thomas owned a research property off the coast of Maine. It was sold after his death.”

“To whom?”

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“A company controlled by Daniel.”

Claire thought of the burned clinic in Maine and Anna Mercer walking into the Vermont pharmacy.

Thomas had been working near the Lazarus patients for years.

“Why didn’t he contact us?” Claire demanded.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“He contacted me.”

The betrayal was no longer surprising.

“How long?”

“Eight years.”

“You knew he was alive for eight years.”

“He made me swear—”

Claire slapped her.

The sound silenced the command area.

Evelyn did not defend herself.

“You let Daniel believe Father was dead,” Claire said. “You let me carry this family while you protected secret laboratories and illegal trials.”

“I thought Thomas could cure Daniel.”

“You always thought betrayal became love if you did it for Daniel.”

Evelyn’s eyes closed.

“You are right.”

Claire turned away before grief weakened her resolve.

Reed approached with another file.

“The archive identified forty-three Continuum sites. Federal teams are moving on them now.”

“Celeste will warn them.”

“She has no access to communication.”

“You still underestimate her.”

A technician called Reed toward a monitor.

Live satellite images showed explosions at several Continuum locations.

One after another, the sites disappeared from the map.

“They are destroying evidence,” Reed said.

“No,” Claire replied. “They are eliminating patients.”

Daniel suddenly sat upright inside the medical vehicle.

The heart monitor accelerated.

He tore the IV from his arm and climbed out before the doctors could stop him.

“Daniel!” Claire called.

He stared toward the north.

“Thomas activated the final protocol.”

“How do you know?”

“I remember designing it.”

“Daniel designed it or Malcolm?”

He looked at her.

“Both.”

Every screen in the command area turned black.

Thomas’s face returned.

This was not a recording.

He looked older, exhausted and frightened.

“Claire,” he said, “Celeste is on the island.”

“You can see me?”

“For now.”

“Father?”

Emotion flickered across his face.

“I am sorry.”

“You don’t get to say that and disappear again.”

“There is no time. Celeste has Anna Mercer and six other stabilized subjects. She intends to open the identity archive.”

“What is inside it?”

Thomas looked beyond the camera.

“Everyone Malcolm copied before the explosion.”

A gun appeared beside his head.

Celeste stepped into view.

Her wounded shoulder had been bandaged. She smiled at Claire through the screen.

“Bring Daniel to the island,” she said, “or I start waking the dead.”

👉 Celeste had escaped with the only stable Lazarus patients, and the island laboratory held enough preserved identities to replace thousands of living people.
