Chapter 6 - Patient twelve

Anna survived the gunshot.

The bullet entered beneath her shoulder blade and missed her heart, but surgeons expected her to remain unconscious for several days. She was moved into federal protection under an assumed name.

Claire’s room was relocated again.

This time the hospital placed her in an underground surgical recovery unit with no windows and only one electronically controlled entrance. Every person entering had to pass facial recognition, fingerprint verification and a physical search.

Yet Claire no longer believed walls could protect her.

The people hunting Anna had manipulated hospital systems, erased surveillance footage and placed messages on isolated medical equipment. They had access to technology beyond anything Hartwell Biotech officially possessed.

And according to Anna, Daniel had created it.

Claire spent the morning reviewing Project Lazarus with Detective Reed.

The original research had focused on regenerative proteins capable of repairing damaged neural pathways. Daniel’s division worked on memory retention after traumatic brain injury. Claire managed operations and regulatory compliance, while their father supervised the scientific teams.

The project was terminated after several animals displayed abnormal behavioral transfer.

“What does that mean?” Reed asked.

Claire enlarged a report on the tablet.

“Lab animals that received neural tissue treatment began demonstrating trained responses belonging to donor animals.”

“Memories?”

“At the time, the researchers called them conditioned echoes.”

“A polite phrase.”

“It was twelve years ago. The science was uncertain.”

“But Daniel continued it.”

“Apparently.”

Reed handed Claire a scanned page recovered from the old laboratory.

Daniel had written across the top:

Memory is not stored in one place. It is distributed through structure, chemistry and repetition. Repair enough of the structure, and the past may return.

Below the note was a list of patient numbers.

Patient Twelve was Anna Mercer.

Patient Thirteen had no name.

Only the initials D.H.

“Daniel Hart,” Reed said.

Claire stared at the page.

The treatment date was four days after the boating accident.

“That is impossible.”

“Unless he survived.”

“Why would he receive Lazarus?”

“Perhaps he was injured.”

Claire remembered the video of Daniel in the boat cabin. He had known an accident was coming. He had prepared messages and hidden evidence. If he survived with catastrophic neurological damage, someone might have used Lazarus to save him.

But Anna’s warning returned.

He isn’t Daniel anymore.

Claire requested all available data on Patient Thirteen.

Most files were corrupted. The surviving notes described severe cranial trauma, prolonged oxygen deprivation and extensive memory loss. After three treatments, the patient recognized family photographs and recalled security codes he had never been shown during recovery.

After five treatments, he became violent.

After seven, the notes stopped.

The final entry read:

Patient Thirteen demonstrates donor convergence. Identity boundaries unstable. Transfer complete.

“Donor convergence,” Claire whispered.

Reed frowned.

“Whose memories were transferred into him?”

The answer was missing.

Claire searched the old personnel files for scientists involved in neural memory research. One name appeared repeatedly: Dr. Malcolm Voss.

Voss had been Hartwell’s chief scientific officer until he died in a laboratory explosion twelve years earlier.

He was also Marcus Hale’s father.

Claire understood why Daniel had told Evelyn not to trust the compass.

Marcus and Daniel had made their promise after Malcolm Voss’s death. The broken compass may not have symbolized loyalty.

It may have identified the people who continued his work.

Reed attempted to contact Marcus.

His phone was disconnected.

His apartment was empty.

His car had been found in the hospital parking garage with blood on the driver’s seat.

“He warned me not to go to Hartwell Recovery Center,” Claire said.

“There is no registered facility by that name.”

“Search the shell companies.”

Reed did.

A property appeared under Hartwell Renewal Holdings, located forty miles north of the city. It was listed as a rehabilitation retreat for senior executives.

Satellite images showed a large building surrounded by forest and high fencing.

The utility records indicated the supposedly vacant property consumed enough electricity to operate a small hospital.

“We need a warrant,” Reed said.

“You need more than that. Celeste will know the moment you request one.”

“Then what do you suggest?”

Claire looked at the Project Lazarus files.

“Let her think she has won.”

By afternoon, Claire’s doctors announced that her condition had worsened. The announcement was deliberate and false. A controlled leak reported that she had suffered neurological damage and might never regain speech.

Within an hour, Celeste petitioned the probate court for emergency control of the Hart family trust.

She also requested Claire’s transfer to a specialized long-term care facility.

Hartwell Recovery Center.

Claire watched the legal request arrive on Reed’s tablet.

“She took the bait,” Reed said.

“No,” Claire replied. “She was already waiting for it.”

A federal judge approved the transfer under sealed supervision. Claire would be transported in an ambulance equipped with hidden tracking devices. Agents would follow at a distance, allowing Celeste’s people to believe the transfer was legitimate.

Before departure, a nurse brought Claire a sealed envelope.

“No sender,” the nurse said. “It was found at reception.”

Inside was a photograph of Daniel and Marcus standing beside a lake seven years earlier. Both men displayed their broken compass tattoos.

On the back, someone had written:

ONE BROTHER DIED ON THE BOAT.

THE OTHER ONE WOKE UP INSIDE HIM.

Beneath the message was a fingerprint made in dried blood.

Reed sent it for immediate analysis.

The result returned minutes before Claire’s ambulance left the hospital.

The blood belonged to Marcus Hale.

The fingerprint belonged to Daniel Hart.

👉 Claire allowed herself to be transported into Celeste’s hidden facility knowing that Daniel’s body—and Marcus’s blood—might be waiting inside.
